Loads we look for

Federal rules treat auto transporters as specialized equipment. States can't limit them to less than 65 feet overall, or 75 feet for stinger-steered rigs, plus at least 3 feet of front and 4 feet of rear overhang (23 CFR 658.13). Cars, light trucks and vans of 10,000 lbs or less must be tied down front and rear with at least two tiedowns (49 CFR 393.128).

What brokers will ask for

Car hauler brokers usually ask for:

• Active MC authority and USDOT number
• Auto liability of $1,000,000 and cargo coverage per vehicle and per load
• Trailer type, number of spots and whether you have a winch
• Photos and a condition report at pickup and delivery
• ELD for tracking and hours of service
