Main routes and truck traffic
The highways most loads in and out of Indianapolis run on: I-65, I-70, I-69, I-74, I-465, US 31, US 36, SR 37.
I-65 runs northwest to Chicago and south to Louisville and Nashville. I-70 heads east to Columbus, Ohio and west to St. Louis. I-69 goes northeast toward Fort Wayne and Detroit and southwest toward Evansville, and I-74 runs southeast to Cincinnati and northwest toward Peoria. I-465 rings the city and ties them all together.
INDOT's 2023 freight plan says Indianapolis and Northwest Indiana have the most congested freight highways in the state, with unreliable truck travel times on I-465, I-65, I-69, I-70, US 36, SR 37 and SR 67. It names I-465 between US 31 and Keystone Parkway, I-465 near Kentucky Avenue and I-70 east of Eagle Creek as truck crash hot spots. The Clear Path 465 project is adding lanes on the northeast side and rebuilding the I-465/I-69 interchange.

Who hauls out of Indianapolis
Nearly two out of three for-hire carriers based in Indianapolis run a single truck or less. That's who we work for: owner-operators and small fleets who want a dispatcher handling the load boards, broker calls and paperwork. One company registered in May 2026 reports 24,002 trucks and 2 drivers, an obvious filing error, so we left it out of the truck count and the table below.

What we book, by truck type
Dry van
E-commerce, parcel and retail distribution keep dry vans moving all year. Indianapolis is a strong reload market, so we can usually line up your next load close by.
Reefer
Pharmaceutical, grocery and food freight move through the metro. We confirm temperature settings and pulp checks before we book.
Power only
Preloaded trailers and drop-and-hook freight out of the warehouses around Plainfield, Whitestown and Avon suit power only units.
Flatbed
Machinery, building materials and steel move to the area's plants and job sites. We check securement and tarp needs before we book.
Box truck
Final-mile, store and event freight around a metro this size works well for 26-foot box trucks, including deliveries around the Indianapolis 500 in May.
How we dispatch here
- INDOT found several rest areas around Indianapolis full at the overnight peak, so we plan your 10-hour break before you roll
- We confirm appointment times with the big Plainfield, Whitestown and Avon warehouses before we book, and plan around I-465 rush hours
- Trucks over 26,000 lb are limited to 65 mph on Indiana's rural interstates, so we plan transit times at that speed
- We plan west-side pickups and deliveries around Indianapolis 500 race weekend (May 30, 2027), when traffic near the Speedway picks up
- Interstate carriers need nothing extra from Indiana. For-hire loads that stay inside Indiana need Intrastate Operating Authority from the Indiana Department of Revenue
