Where the freight is in Alabama
Main corridors
The interstates most of our Alabama loads run on: I-65, I-20 / I-59, I-85, I-10, I-22.
I-65 runs the length of the state from Huntsville through Birmingham and Montgomery to Mobile. I-20/59 crosses at Birmingham, and I-10 runs along the Gulf through Mobile.
Freight and seasons
Autos and parts, steel, forest products and chemicals lead Alabama. Hurricane season can disrupt Mobile from June to November.
Alabama rules to know
Every interstate carrier needs a USDOT number, MC authority, UCR and, for most semis, IRP plates and an IFTA license. On top of that:
Intrastate certificate
Interstate carriers need nothing extra. For-hire carriers hauling loads that stay inside Alabama need a Motor Carrier Certificate from the Alabama Public Service Commission, with insurance filings on file. Source
Port of Mobile
The port finished deepening its channel to 50 feet in October 2025 and is served by five Class I railroads. Source
Hazmat and the Wallace Tunnel
Placarded hazmat can't use I-10's Wallace Tunnel in Mobile and must take the signed detour. Source

Questions carriers ask
Do I need Alabama authority?
Only for for-hire loads that stay inside Alabama. Interstate carriers use their USDOT and MC.
Can hazmat loads go through Mobile on I-10?
Not through the Wallace Tunnel. Placarded loads take the signed detour.
Is Alabama good for flatbeds?
Yes. Steel and auto plant freight keep flatbeds and step decks busy.
