Freight in Birmingham
Birmingham is Alabama's largest metro area, with about 22% of the state's people, and the place where its main interstates cross. ALDOT's 2022 freight plan calls it the state's largest and most diversified economy, with industrial parks, foreign trade zone sites and private industrial sites shipping by road, rail, air and water. Three Class I railroads (BNSF, CSX and Norfolk Southern) and three short lines work out of the city, and the 184-acre Port of Birmingham on the Black Warrior River moves barge freight.
New warehouses keep adding freight. ALDOT lists recent distribution centers for Amazon (850,000 square feet in Bessemer), Buffalo Rock, Carvana, Coca-Cola, Dollar General, FedEx, Lowe's, Motion Industries and WeatherTech. Norfolk Southern's 316-acre intermodal yard in McCalla and CSX's container yard in Bessemer load trailers and containers onto trains, and J.M. Smucker makes frozen sandwiches in McCalla. Metal products still ship too: AMERICAN (American Cast Iron Pipe Company), founded in Birmingham in 1905, makes ductile iron pipe, steel pipe, valves and hydrants.

Dry van
New distribution centers in Bessemer, Birmingham and Homewood ship retail, e-commerce and beverage freight. We look for reloads close to town so you're not deadheading out of Alabama.
Reefer

Flatbed
Pipe, valves, steel and building materials move out of Birmingham's plants and yards. We check securement, tarp needs and permits before we book.
Box truck
Regional retail and final-mile freight around Birmingham, Hoover and Bessemer suits 26-foot box trucks.
Power only
Preloaded trailers and drop-and-hook freight out of Birmingham-area distribution centers work well for power only units.
How we dispatch here
- We plan around the I-20/I-65 interchange downtown, one of the worst truck bottlenecks in the country, and use I-459 when it saves time
- ALDOT finds truck parking short on I-459 and on I-65 and I-59 near Birmingham, so we plan your stop before you roll
- I-22 has no public rest areas or public truck parking between Mississippi and I-65, so we plan Memphis runs with a stop in mind
- We watch the Talladega race weekends, when I-20 east of town gets busy, and the Gulf in hurricane season
- Interstate carriers only need their USDOT number and MC. For-hire loads that stay inside Alabama need a certificate from the Alabama Public Service Commission
State rules, permits and taxes are on our Alabama dispatch page.
Pricing
a percentage of the load's gross, quoted for your truck and lanes, charged only on loads we book. No contract, and your first load is free.
