Freight in Huntsville
Huntsville is Alabama's largest city, but it sits off the main interstate grid. I-565 runs east from I-65 near Decatur through Madison into Huntsville, US 72 carries trucks east toward Chattanooga, and US 231 and US 431 run south. ALDOT's freight plan says the city lacks interstate access to larger cities such as Chattanooga, names I-65 north of Huntsville as Alabama's second-busiest truck corridor, and adds I-565 between I-65 and Huntsville to its 2050 list of freight bottlenecks.
Most of the freight comes from the west side along I-565. Mazda Toyota Manufacturing builds the Corolla Cross and Mazda CX-50, with room for 300,000 vehicles a year, and is the city's No. 4 employer with about 4,000 workers. Toyota Alabama builds nearly 1.5 million engines and differentials a year for the Tacoma, Tundra, Highlander and other models. ALDOT also lists Polaris, Vuteq and an Amazon fulfillment center in the Greenbrier area, and Lilly is building a $6 billion medicine plant on I-565 near Exit 3, due in 2032. Blue Origin builds BE-4 rocket engines in Huntsville. The Port of Huntsville joins the airport's air cargo center with a Norfolk Southern rail terminal that has on-site Customs and Foreign Trade Zone No. 83.

Main routes and truck traffic
The highways most loads in and out of Huntsville run on: I-565, I-65, US 72, US 231, US 431, AL 255 (Research Park Blvd), AL 20.
I-565 is the main truck route: it runs from I-65 near Decatur east past Mazda Toyota, the airport and the Port of Huntsville, through Madison and Research Park, to downtown Huntsville. I-65 runs north to Nashville and south through Cullman to Birmingham. US 72 runs west to Athens and Florence and east toward Scottsboro and Chattanooga, and US 231 and US 431 run south toward the I-59 corridor. Research Park Boulevard (AL 255) links I-565 with the plants and offices on the west side.
Public truck parking is thin. ALDOT lists no rest area on I-565. The closest on I-65 are the Ardmore Welcome Center near the Tennessee line, which reopened in October 2024 after nearly two years of rebuilding, and the Cullman County rest area at mile 301. ALDOT's model shows truck parking demand going unmet on I-565 in both directions between I-65 and US 72 by 2050, and on I-65 northbound between I-565 and the Tennessee line today.

What we book, by truck type
Dry van
Auto parts, engines and distribution freight move in dry vans along I-565. We look for the reload in north Alabama so you're not deadheading to Nashville or Birmingham.
Flatbed
Plant equipment, construction materials and big aerospace parts keep flatbeds and step decks busy. We check securement, tarps and any oversize permit before you go.
Reefer
Grocery distribution and the airport's cold storage move by reefer. We confirm the temperature, the pulp and the appointment before we book.
Power only
Plants and warehouses on the west side put preloaded trailers on the market. We confirm the trailer, the pickup number and the gate rules before you go.
Box truck
Retail, parcel and grocery deliveries across Huntsville and Madison suit 26-foot box trucks, including final-mile work.
How we dispatch here
- Auto and engine plants run on tight appointments, so we leave buffer time on I-565 around shift changes
- For containers at the Port of Huntsville's rail terminal, we check the hours first: weekdays 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Central, with after-hours service by request
- There's no rest area on I-565, so we line up your overnight stop before you roll
- Military and aerospace sites around Redstone Arsenal have their own gate rules, so we confirm access before we book
- Interstate carriers need nothing extra from Alabama. For-hire loads that stay inside the state need an Alabama PSC Motor Carrier Certificate
State rules, permits and taxes are on our Alabama dispatch page.
Pricing
A percentage of the load's gross, quoted for your truck and lanes, charged only on loads we book. No contract, and your first load is free.
