Freight in Wilmington
Wilmington's freight starts at the port. The Port of Wilmington, owned by the state's Diamond State Port Corporation and run by Enstructure, handles more than 400 vessels and 6 million tons of cargo a year, with 1 million square feet of cold storage and ambient warehousing and more than 2,000 reefer plugs. The operator says it is North America's largest banana port and the leading U.S. gateway for imported fresh fruit: Dole and Chiquita each call twice a week year-round, Chilean fruit arrives from December to April, and Citrosuco runs a bulk juice terminal there with more than 10 million gallons of storage.
Warehouses and retail fill in the rest. The City of Wilmington's 2024 list of principal employers puts Amazon at No. 4 with 10,000 workers and Walmart at No. 12, with Acme Markets, ShopRite and Food Lion further down, plus manufacturers W. L. Gore and DuPont, drug makers AstraZeneca and Incyte, and the Delaware poultry companies Perdue Farms, Mountaire Farms and Allen Harim. DelDOT's 2022 freight plan says about 68.7 million tons of freight moved to, from or within Delaware in 2020, and pharmaceuticals were the top commodity by value.

Counts are from the 2021 DelDOT and WILMAPCO truck parking study (Jason's Law 2015 data), the latest we found. That study found 337 truck spaces at 12 locations statewide, most of them private, and named the Biden Welcome Center as the state's largest cluster of trucks parked outside marked spaces. Source

What we book, by truck type
Dry van
Amazon, Walmart and the grocery chains keep dry vans moving all year, and the port's warehouses ship to the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. We look for the reload before you deliver so you're not deadheading out of Delaware.
Reefer
Bananas, Chilean fruit, clementines and juice come through the port's cold storage, and poultry plants ship refrigerated loads. We confirm the temperature, the pickup number and the appointment before we book.
Flatbed
The port handles steel, forest products, project cargo and wind energy parts, and construction keeps flatbeds busy. We check securement, tarps and any permits before we book.
Power only
Port containers and preloaded trailers from the warehouses along I-95 and I-495 need a tractor. We confirm the trailer or container, the pickup number and the hours before you go.
Box truck
Retail, grocery and parcel distribution across Wilmington, Newark and New Castle means steady box truck work, including final-mile deliveries.
How we dispatch here
- For port loads we route you to I-495 exit 2 and Terminal Avenue, which dead-ends at the gate; from the New Jersey Turnpike, take the first exit after the bridge toll (9A North) and turn right on Terminal Avenue
- We count the tolls as trip costs: a 5-axle truck pays $10 at the I-95 Newark plaza and $35 with E-ZPass ($40 cash) on the Delaware Memorial Bridge
- Chilean fruit season runs December to April, so we plan reefer reloads around the port's busy months
- Truck parking is tight near the port: the Christiana Truck Stop off I-495 is usually full, so we line up your 10-hour break before you roll
- Delaware limits idling to 3 minutes in most cases for trucks over 8,500 lb, so we plan around waits at docks
State rules, permits and taxes are on our Delaware dispatch page.
