Freight in Lexington

Lexington sits where I-75, the north-south route from Detroit and Cincinnati to Knoxville and Atlanta, meets I-64 between Louisville and West Virginia. Commerce Lexington, the local economic development group, says the area reaches more than two-thirds of the U.S. population over those two interstates, and that Lexington's UPS Ground hub delivers to 90% of U.S. ZIP codes within three days. KYTC expects traffic on I-75 between Paris Pike and the southern I-64/I-75 split to pass 130,000 vehicles a day by 2040, and has been widening that stretch.

The biggest freight source is Toyota Kentucky in Georgetown, just north on I-75: about 10,000 full-time workers building the Camry Hybrid and RAV4 Hybrid, with capacity for 550,000 vehicles and more than 600,000 four-cylinder and V-6 engines a year. Lexington itself makes heavy equipment. Link-Belt builds telescopic and lattice boom cranes at an 812,000 sq ft headquarters and plant, CLARK Material Handling builds forklifts, SRC of Lexington remanufactures parts for construction and mining equipment, and Lexair makes industrial valves. Piramal Pharma makes sterile injectable drugs, Tiffany & Co. makes fine jewelry, and Webasto has run a plant in the Blue Grass Business Park for more than 25 years.

I-75 runs north through Georgetown to Cincinnati and south through Richmond and London to Knoxville. I-64 runs west to Frankfort and Louisville and east to Winchester, Morehead and Ashland. The two interstates share the road on the north and east sides of the city between their northern and southern splits. New Circle Road (KY 4) and Man o' War Boulevard ring the city, and US 27, US 60, US 25 and US 421 run out like spokes toward the business parks and nearby towns.

Truck parking is the pinch point. KYTC's 2022 study ranks the I-75 site at mile 127 in Scott County 8th and the I-75 site at mile 76 in Madison County 6th among Kentucky's truck parking needs, and found about 20 trucks a night parked on the Scott County ramps. What we book, by truck type

Dry van

Plants in Lexington and Georgetown ship parts and finished goods, and UPS runs a ground hub in town. We look for the reload close to the Bluegrass so you're not deadheading to Cincinnati or Louisville.

Reefer

Grocery distribution and temperature-controlled pharmaceuticals move by reefer. We confirm the temperature, the pulp and the appointment before we book.

Flatbed

Cranes, forklifts and remanufactured mining parts keep flatbeds and step decks busy. We check securement, tarps and any oversize permit before you go.

Power only

Plants and warehouses along I-75 put preloaded trailers on the market. We confirm the trailer, the pickup number and the dock hours before you go.

Box truck

Retail, parcel and event deliveries around Lexington suit 26-foot box trucks, and most box trucks stay under Kentucky's KYU weight threshold.

How we dispatch here

  • Semis over 59,999 lb need a Kentucky KYU number before they run Kentucky roads, so we confirm yours before booking
  • Heading north on I-75, expect the Scott County weigh station near Georgetown at mile 130.4
  • We line up your overnight stop before you leave, because KYTC ranks the I-75 Scott County site among Kentucky's 10 biggest truck parking needs
  • For oversize loads, KYTC has barred permitted moves in Fayette County from 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m., with an exception for loads that start in Fayette County, so we check the permit before we plan the pickup
  • We plan around Keeneland's race meets in April and October and the Breeders' Cup on October 30–31, 2026, when crowds head to the track on US 60
