Freight in Baton Rouge
Baton Rouge is where I-10 crosses the Mississippi River on the Horace Wilkinson Bridge and where I-12 splits off toward Hammond and Slidell. DOTD's 2024 freight plan, using FHWA's 2023 data, ranks I-10 westbound from the bridge to Exit 160 as Louisiana's No. 2 truck bottleneck (about 11,755 trucks a day), I-10 eastbound from Exit 160 to the bridge No. 4 (about 11,200) and I-10 westbound from Exit 153 to the bridge No. 3. I-12 eastbound from I-10 to Exit 2 is No. 8, with about 10,900 trucks a day. ATRI also lists the I-10/I-110 interchange and the bridge among the 100 worst truck bottlenecks in the country.
The freight comes from the river and the plants. The Port of Greater Baton Rouge in Port Allen sits at the head of deepwater navigation, where the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway meets the Mississippi, with an export grain elevator, liquid and dry bulk terminals, an inland rivers terminal and a foreign-trade zone, and handles cargo from asphalt and coal to coffee, sugar, plastics, pipe and steel. ExxonMobil runs the sixth-largest refinery in the U.S., Formosa Plastics makes PVC resin, Stupp makes steel line pipe at two plants, and Katoen Natie is adding a 300,000 sq ft warehouse at its polymers terminal. Amazon announced an 820,000 sq ft robotics fulfillment center in 2021. Industrial contractors Turner Industries (about 7,714 workers), Performance Contractors and Excel Group are among the parish's 10 largest employers.

DOTD's freight plan lists I-10 from LA 415 in West Baton Rouge across the bridge to College Drive, and I-12 from LA 73 (Exit 1C) to Millerville Road, among Louisiana's top freight needs for safety, reliability and truck parking. The closest are Breaux Bridge on I-10 (mile 108, St. Martin Parish), Baptist on I-12 (mile 36, Tangipahoa Parish) and LaPlace on I-10 (mile 207, St. John the Baptist Parish), each in both directions. What we book, by truck type
Flatbed
Steel pipe, structural steel and plant equipment make Baton Rouge a strong flatbed market. We check securement, tarps and any oversize permit before we book.
Tanker
Refineries and chemical plants ship liquid bulk. Tank loads need a tank endorsement and hazmat loads need the hazmat endorsement too, so we only book what your CDL and your authority cover.
Dry van
E-commerce, packaged polymers and port warehouse freight keep dry vans busy. We look for the reload before you deliver so you're not stuck in bridge traffic for nothing.
Reefer
Grocery distribution and the fall harvest in south Louisiana keep reefers moving. We confirm the temperature, the pulp and the appointment before we book.
Power only
Plants, terminals and distribution centers put preloaded trailers on the market. We confirm the trailer, the pickup number and the gate rules before you go.
How we dispatch here
- We avoid appointments that put you on the I-10 Mississippi River bridge at rush hour, the No. 2 truck bottleneck in Louisiana
- There's no DOTD rest area in Baton Rouge or on I-12, so we lock in your overnight stop before you roll
- Expect DOTD scales at Breaux Bridge on I-10 to the west and at Baptist on I-12 to the east; when the sign says so, move to the right lane for weigh-in-motion screening
- For refinery and chemical plant pickups, we confirm the gate, the appointment and any site rules before you go
- Louisiana doesn't require extra authority for general freight. The Public Service Commission only regulates household goods, passengers, waste and non-consent towing
State rules, permits and taxes are on our Louisiana dispatch page.
Pricing
A percentage of the load's gross, quoted for your truck and lanes, charged only on loads we book. No contract, and your first load is free.
