Freight in Portland

Portland is Maine's main port and the south end of most of the state's truck freight. MaineDOT says trucks carry almost 90% of Maine's freight tonnage, and its 2017 freight strategy found that Cumberland County, home to Portland, moves about 15% of the state's freight by value. At the International Marine Terminal (IMT), run by the Maine Port Authority since 2009, Eimskip has called since 2013 and went to weekly calls in December 2017. Its Green Line sails directly from Iceland to Portland, and the company says cold-chain freight such as fresh North Atlantic salmon is a main line of business.

Local freight comes from retail, medical and food companies. Maine's Department of Labor list of the largest private employers in Cumberland County (third quarter of 2024) includes three IDEXX units (laboratories, operations and distribution), three L.L.Bean units, Abbott Diagnostics Scarborough, Texas Instruments and Walmart. Just south in York County, the list includes RTX, Nestle Waters USA, Corning, Stonewall Kitchen, Hannaford, Shaw's and DeMoulas Super Markets. Oakhurst Dairy runs its own fleet of 61 trucks from a Portland address, according to FMCSA.

Main routes and truck traffic

The highways most loads in and out of Portland run on: I-95 (Maine Turnpike), I-295, US 1, US 302, ME 25, ME 9.

The Maine Turnpike (I-95) runs south from Portland to Kittery and the New Hampshire line, and north through Gray and Lewiston to Augusta. I-295 runs along the Portland waterfront and north up the coast to Brunswick and Gardiner, where it joins I-95 again. US 1 follows the coast, and US 302 heads northwest from downtown Portland toward Windham and the White Mountains.

The Maine Turnpike Authority counted 8,575,141 commercial-vehicle (class 2 and up) toll transactions in 2024, out of 95.6 million in all, about 23,400 a day across the road. In the first half of 2025 the commercial share rose to about 9.4%. MaineDOT's 2008 I-295 corridor study found that most of I-295 in Portland and South Portland carries 70,000 to 85,000 vehicles a day, so plan around rush hours on the waterfront stretch.

Weigh stations

Maine State Police say Maine has permanent weigh and inspection facilities on I-95 in Kittery, York, Sidney and Old Town, and use rest areas on I-95 and other routes as temporary sites. Troop G, based on Congress Street in Portland, patrols the Maine Turnpike from Kittery to Augusta, where the Kittery and York stations sit. Enrolled carriers can use Drivewyze PreClear to bypass open stations, at rates the State Police set. Source

What we book, by truck type

Dry van

Retail, grocery and medical-products freight moves in and out of the Portland area all year. Maine is at the end of the line, so we look for the reload before you deliver to avoid a long deadhead back to Boston.

Reefer

Eimskip's cold-chain freight at the marine terminal, dairy and grocery chains like Hannaford and Shaw's mean refrigerated work. We confirm the temperature and the appointment before we book.

Flatbed

Construction, lumber and wood products, which MaineDOT ranks among the state's top freight by weight, keep flatbeds moving. We check securement and tarps before we book.

Power only

Port containers and preloaded trailers at distribution sites need a tractor. We confirm the trailer, the pickup number and the dock hours before you go.

Box truck

Retail, grocery and parcel distribution across Portland, South Portland, Westbrook and Scarborough means steady box truck work, including final-mile deliveries.

How we dispatch here

  • Coming up from New Hampshire, expect the York scale northbound on the Maine Turnpike; heading south, the Kittery scale is the last one before the state line
  • Maine Turnpike service plazas let commercial vehicles park for up to 12 hours, so we plan your 10-hour break at Kennebunk, Cumberland, Gray or West Gardiner
  • Every Turnpike plaza sells diesel, but the Authority sometimes posts short fuel outages, so we check its notices before a tight run
  • We avoid tight appointments that put you on I-295 along the Portland waterfront at rush hour
  • From December through March we watch the forecast: Portland averages about 71 inches of snow a year, most of it in those months
