Freight in Detroit
The Detroit–Warren–Dearborn metro has about 374,100 jobs in trade, transportation and utilities (BLS, August 2026, preliminary). Cars and parts lead: GM's Factory ZERO builds the GMC HUMMER EV, Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV and Cadillac Escalade IQ, and Stellantis's Detroit Assembly Complex – Jefferson builds the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango. Plants run on tight delivery windows, so parts freight moves every day.
Canada is the other big driver. More trucks enter the U.S. at Detroit than at any other northern crossing: 1.13 million in 2025, by federal count. The Ambassador Bridge now has company: the Gordie Howe International Bridge opened on July 27, 2026, with three lanes each way and ramps straight to I-75. The Port of Detroit adds steel, ore and bulk cargo at 29 terminals in Detroit, River Rouge and Ecorse.

What we book, by truck type
Dry van
Auto parts, packaging and retail freight keep dry vans busy. We look for reloads close to Detroit, or a short run away in Toledo or Ohio, so you're not deadheading out of Michigan.
Reefer
Grocery distribution ships all year, and Michigan apples, blueberries and other produce move from summer into spring. We plan reloads so the unit isn't running empty.
Flatbed
Steel from the port, machinery and plant equipment move in and out of the region. We check securement, tarp needs and spring weight limits before we book.
Power only
Preloaded trailers from auto suppliers and distribution centers suit power only. We confirm the trailer, the pickup number and the plant's gate rules before you go.
Box truck
A big metro means steady box truck work, including final-mile deliveries across Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties.
How we dispatch here
- Auto plants run on tight appointments, so we leave buffer time for Detroit traffic and border delays
- We only book loads into Canada when your authority, insurance and border paperwork are set up for it, and we compare the Ambassador Bridge and Gordie Howe routes for each trip
- We count the Gordie Howe bridge toll as a trip cost: $8.75 USD per axle, or $6.90 with a Breakaway account, so a 5-axle semi pays $43.75 at the standard rate
- From February through May we check Michigan's spring weight restrictions (frost laws) before booking heavy loads
- Interstate general freight carriers with current UCR need no Michigan authority. For-hire loads that stay inside Michigan need intrastate authority from the State Police
State rules, permits and taxes are on our Michigan dispatch page.
Pricing
a percentage of the load's gross, quoted for your truck and lanes, charged only on loads we book. No contract, and your first load is free.
