Freight in Pittsburgh
Allegheny County has more freight-related jobs than any other county in Pennsylvania, about 76,200 in PennDOT's 2045 freight plan. In the state's latest list of the county's 50 largest employers (fourth quarter of 2023), Giant Eagle ranks No. 5, Walmart No. 15, U.S. Steel No. 16, Dick's Sporting Goods No. 20, Amazon No. 23, PPG No. 30, Home Depot No. 37, FedEx Ground No. 38, Lowe's No. 41 and UPS No. 43. U.S. Steel's Mon Valley Works runs three plants along the Monongahela: Clairton makes coke for the Edgar Thomson Plant in Braddock and for U.S. Steel's plant in Gary, Indiana; Edgar Thomson makes steel slabs; and the Irvin Plant in West Mifflin rolls them into sheet for appliance, auto, metal building and home construction customers. The Port of Pittsburgh is a barge district with more than 200 miles of commercial waterways and 16 locks and dams; PennDOT's freight plan lists coal, limestone, sand and gravel, gypsum and slag as its top cargo. What we book, by truck type
Dry van
Grocery, big-box retail and e-commerce freight keep dry vans busy all year. We look for reloads close to Pittsburgh so you're not deadheading out to Ohio or the East Coast.
Reefer
Grocery distribution and Pennsylvania's summer and fall harvests keep reefers moving. We confirm the temperature and pulp requirements before we book.
Flatbed
Steel coils and sheet from the Mon Valley, plus pipe, machinery and building materials, make this a strong flatbed market. We check securement, coil racks and tarp needs before we book.
Power only
Distribution centers and parcel hubs around the city put preloaded trailers on the market. We confirm the trailer, the pickup number and the gate rules before you go.
Box truck
Retail, grocery and parcel distribution across Allegheny County means steady box truck work, including final-mile deliveries.
How we dispatch here
- PennDOT names the Turnpike in western Pennsylvania among the worst spots for trucks parked on shoulders and ramps, so we lock in your overnight stop before you roll
- In a winter storm, Tier 1 restrictions keep tractors pulling empty or lightly loaded trailers off affected highways, so we time empty moves and reloads around the forecast
- We count Pennsylvania Turnpike tolls as a trip cost before we accept a load
- We avoid tight appointments that run you through the I-376 bottleneck at rush hour
- Interstate carriers need nothing extra from Pennsylvania. For-hire loads that start and end in Pennsylvania need authority from the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission
State rules, permits and taxes are on our Pennsylvania dispatch page.
Pricing
a percentage of the load's gross, quoted for your truck and lanes, charged only on loads we book. No contract, and your first load is free.

Questions carriers ask
Are there dry van loads out of Pittsburgh?
Yes. Grocery, big-box retail, e-commerce and parcel employers rank among Allegheny County's largest, and steel and industrial plants ship all year. We search the major load boards and our broker contacts for loads that fit your lanes and minimum rate.
