Freight in Albuquerque

Albuquerque is where I-40, the cross-country route from the Southeast to California, crosses I-25 between El Paso and Denver. NMDOT's I-40 corridor study found that 80–90% of the freight trips on I-40 between the Arizona line and Albuquerque are through trips, and federal freight data used in the study projects tonnage on I-40 in New Mexico to grow from about 47 million tons a year in 2017 to 86 million by 2050. Most trucks here are passing through, so the work is finding a load out of Albuquerque that fits where you're headed.

The Albuquerque Regional Economic Alliance lists Intel (about 2,100 employees in Rio Rancho), ABB Installation Products and SolAero by Rocket Lab (about 500 each) and General Mills (about 200) among the area's largest industrial employers, plus Meta's 750-acre data center campus in Los Lunas and Arcosa's wind tower plant in Belen. Intel opened Fab 9 in Rio Rancho in January 2024 for 3D chip packaging, and ARRAY Technologies opened a 216,000-square-foot solar tracker plant on the West Side in September 2026. Amazon opened its second New Mexico fulfillment center in Los Lunas in August 2024 and runs a 30,000-square-foot air cargo facility at the Sunport.

Main routes and truck traffic

The highways most loads in and out of Albuquerque run on: I-40, I-25, Big I (I-25/I-40), US 550, Paseo del Norte.

I-40 runs west through Gallup to Flagstaff and on toward Los Angeles, and east through Santa Rosa and Tucumcari to Amarillo and Oklahoma City. I-25 runs north to Santa Fe and Denver and south to Las Cruces, where it meets I-10 toward El Paso. US 550 heads northwest toward Farmington. By AREA's mileage chart, El Paso is 266 miles away, Amarillo 289, Phoenix 419, Denver 449, Oklahoma City 544 and Dallas 650.

NMDOT says truck volumes at its I-40 ports of entry are the highest in the state and growing. On I-40 between Arizona and Albuquerque, about 40% of crashes involve a heavy vehicle, close to the share of heavy vehicles on the road, and crashes run higher in the winter months. Winter storms can close I-40 and I-25 at higher elevations.

What we book, by truck type

Dry van

Most I-40 freight just passes through, so we look for dry van loads out of Albuquerque's warehouses and plants that line up with your next lane instead of leaving empty.

Reefer

New Mexico green chile from August, red chile in October and the area's food makers give reefers work. We check temperatures and appointment times on every load.

Flatbed

Solar tracker parts from ARRAY's plant and building materials for the area's construction projects move on flatbeds and step decks. We check securement, tarp needs and permits before we book.

Box truck

Regional retail and final-mile freight around the metro, Rio Rancho and Los Lunas suits 26-foot box trucks, which usually fall under New Mexico's 26,000 lb weight-distance line.

Power only

Preloaded trailers and drop-and-hook freight out of area distribution centers work well for power only units.

How we dispatch here

  • We confirm your New Mexico weight-distance permit before booking any load over 26,000 lb declared gross weight
  • Ports of entry at Gallup and San Jon on I-40 are open 24/7, but Raton on I-25 is not, so we plan northbound arrival times around its hours
  • We check NMRoads before sending you over I-40 or I-25 in winter, when storms can close the high stretches
  • We plan pickups and deliveries around Balloon Fiesta traffic, October 3–11, 2026
  • State rest areas near Albuquerque have few truck spaces, so we plan your stop before you roll

State rules, permits and taxes are on our New Mexico dispatch page.

Fleetorica is a dispatch service, not a broker or carrier. We book loads under your authority, from Albuquerque and anywhere in the lower 48, and you approve every load.
