Free and AI dispatch apps vs a human dispatcher

Load board apps now offer AI assistants, and at least one calls its assistant a free dispatcher. They can save you time. They can't take the phone calls, the paperwork and the planning off your plate the way a person working for you does. Here's what each one actually does, from the companies' own pages, and when the app is the better choice.

Key takeaways

  • AI dispatch apps search loads, compare rates and draft or place broker calls and emails, but you still approve, confirm and handle the load yourself.
  • TruckSmarter's AI Dispatch is free with a weekly limit on requests, or $49 a month for unlimited use (checked October 27, 2026). It searches TruckSmarter's own load board.
  • A human dispatcher negotiates with brokers, checks broker credit, handles setup packets and check calls, plans your next load and sends paperwork to your factoring company.
  • If you have steady direct customers or run one lane, an app or doing it yourself may be all you need.

What free and AI dispatch apps actually do

Facts below are from each company's own website, checked October 27, 2026. They change often. Fleetorica is not affiliated with and is not paid by any company on this page.

TruckSmarter AI Dispatch. TruckSmarter describes Dispatch as an AI chat assistant built into its app. On its page:

  • It finds loads, compares rates and checks market conditions, fuel prices and estimated take-home pay.
  • It can call brokers, verify load details, draft broker emails and help you bid or book. Direct booking works with select brokers if you connect your credentials. For phone bookings it transfers you in at the end so you confirm the load yourself.
  • Nothing is booked without your approval.
  • It searches loads available through TruckSmarter's load board. You can also connect Gmail to bring broker load emails in.
  • Cost: free, with a limited number of chat requests that reset weekly. For more, Dispatch Unlimited is $49 a month, with no commission.
  • You verify your authority (MC/DOT number) to create an account.

Load board apps with AI features. The big load boards sell monthly subscriptions, and some now list AI tools inside them. Trucker Path's paid TruckLoads tiers ($29.99 and $49.99 a month) include AI monthly credits. Truckstop lists an AI voice assistant (AVA) on its Advanced and Pro carrier plans. DAT One's carrier plans list Load Recommendations that learn how you run; DAT doesn't advertise an AI dispatch tier for carriers. Full plans and prices are in load boards compared.

What all of these have in common: the app finds and organizes. You are still the one who decides, confirms with the broker, sends the packet, drives, and chases the paperwork.

What a human dispatcher does that an app doesn't

A dispatcher works for you under a written agreement and takes the office work off your hands while you drive. At Fleetorica that means:

  • Negotiating with the broker on the rate and the accessorials, then sending you the load to approve. See how to negotiate rates.
  • Checking each broker's authority, bond and credit before calling, so you aren't hauling for a broker who pays late or not at all. See how to read a broker's credit and days to pay.
  • Detention, TONU and lumper terms set up front on the rate confirmation, so they can be billed. See getting TONU, layover and lumper paid.
  • Setup packets, rate confirmations and check calls with the broker. The carrier packet checklist shows what brokers ask for.
  • Planning the next load before you deliver to cut deadhead, including the back-haul. See planning a profitable round trip.
  • Sending invoices and paperwork to your factoring company.
  • No app to work while you drive. You get a load to approve, not a chat to run.

A dispatcher also searches more than one board and broker network for your lanes. What stays the same as with an app: you choose your loads, lanes, rates and home time, and nothing is booked without your OK. See how Fleetorica works.

When an app is the better choice

A dispatcher isn't for everyone. An app, or doing it yourself, can make more sense when:

  • You have steady direct customers and only need the odd load to fill a gap.
  • You run one dedicated lane with the same brokers every week.
  • You like working the phones and have the time to vet brokers and do the paperwork yourself.
  • Every dollar of the rate has to stay with you right now and your time is cheaper than a dispatch fee.

A dispatcher tends to pay off when you're on the road most of the day, you're new and don't know which brokers to trust, you run several trucks, or you're losing money to deadhead and unpaid detention. Check the math with your own numbers in the dispatch fee calculator, and see how to choose a truck dispatcher if you decide to hire one.

Questions carriers ask

Is an AI dispatcher really free?

TruckSmarter's page says its AI Dispatch is free with a limited number of chat requests that reset weekly, and Dispatch Unlimited is $49 a month with no commission (checked October 27, 2026). Load board apps with AI features sell them inside monthly subscriptions.

Can an AI app negotiate rates with brokers?

TruckSmarter says its Dispatch can call brokers and help you bid or book, and that for phone bookings it transfers you in at the end to confirm the load yourself. A human dispatcher negotiates the rate and accessorials and sends you the load to approve.

Does an app check if a broker pays on time?

TruckSmarter's Dispatch page doesn't describe a broker credit check. Several load boards show broker credit and days-to-pay data in their plans; see our load boards comparison. A dispatcher checks the broker's authority, bond and credit before calling.

Do I need my own MC authority to use a dispatch app or a dispatcher?

TruckSmarter asks you to verify your authority (MC/DOT number) to sign up. A dispatcher books loads under your own authority too, so you need it active either way.

Can I use an app and a dispatcher together?

Yes. Some carriers book their own regular loads and use a dispatcher to fill the gaps. You only pay Fleetorica on loads we book.
