Freight in Omaha
Omaha sits where I-80 crosses the Missouri River into Iowa and meets I-29, so freight moves east to Des Moines and Chicago, west to Lincoln and Denver, and north and south along the river. NDOT's 2023 freight plan, citing the Greater Omaha Chamber, says truck transportation is 2.23 times more concentrated in Omaha than the national average, and food manufacturing 2.52 times. Union Pacific is headquartered here, and so are beef processors such as Greater Omaha Packing.
The same plan says most of Nebraska's e-commerce operations are in and around Omaha. It lists Commerce Park in Omaha (1.1 million square feet, with a 1.3-million-square-foot expansion), an Omaha Steaks warehouse, a Dollar General distribution center in Blair and Amazon's fulfillment center in Papillion. BNSF runs an intermodal yard south of downtown Omaha, and Union Pacific and the Iowa Interstate Railroad run one across the river in Council Bluffs. Eppley Airfield is served by FedEx, UPS, DHL and, since February 2022, Amazon Air.
