Freight in Sioux Falls

Sioux Falls is South Dakota's freight center. SDDOT's 2023 freight plan says interstate truck traffic in the state runs from 1,000 to more than 5,000 trucks a day, and the busiest segments, over 5,000, are around Sioux Falls, where trucks make up about 20 to 25% of interstate traffic. The plan also notes Amazon's distribution center northwest of the I-29 and I-90 interchange, in the area known as Foundation Park, and says the main cause of truck parking shortages in the state is interstate closures during winter storms.

Food and retail lead local freight. The Sioux Falls Development Foundation's June 2026 list of major employers puts Smithfield Foods at 3,000 to 3,500 workers, Amazon and Hy-Vee at 2,000 to 2,500 each and Walmart/Sam's Club at 1,500 to 2,000, with Showplace Cabinetry (750 to 800), StarMark Cabinetry (650 to 700), CNH/Raven Industries and Daktronics (500 to 550 each) among the manufacturers. In February 2026 Smithfield announced a new pork plant in Foundation Park, near the I-29 and I-90 interchange, to replace the plant that has operated in the city for more than a century, with production planned for the end of 2028.

Main routes and truck traffic

The highways most loads in and out of Sioux Falls run on: I-90, I-29, I-229, US 18, SD 11, SD 42, SD 100.

I-90 runs east into Minnesota toward Albert Lea and west to Mitchell, Chamberlain and Rapid City. I-29 runs north to Brookings, Watertown and Fargo, and south to Sioux City and Omaha. I-229 loops around the south and east sides of the city between I-90 and I-29, and the two interstates meet on the northwest edge of town by Foundation Park.

SDDOT studied rebuilding the I-90/I-29 interchange in a 2024 report as Foundation Park grows. Winter storms can close I-90 and I-29, and from February 15 to April 30 highway authorities can restrict weights to protect roads during the thaw. County roads have their own limits.

Space counts are from SDDOT's truck parking study of the I-90 and I-29 corridors (December 2018), so they're eight years old. On the night it was counted, the Ward rest area on I-29 was over capacity (104%), and the westbound Salem rest area averaged 71% full at night. Source

SDDOT's 2023 freight plan says only 6% of truck parking sites near the interstates are publicly owned, and 34% of the places where trucks were found parked weren't authorized parking. It names interstate closures in winter storms as the main cause of shortages. Source

Weigh stations

The South Dakota Highway Patrol runs four ports of entry, one on each interstate into the state. The closest to Sioux Falls are the Sioux Falls port on I-90 at the Minnesota line and the Jefferson port on I-29 at the Iowa line; the others are Sisseton on I-29 at the North Dakota line and Tilford on I-90 at the Wyoming line. The ports use license plate readers to screen trucks. Source

By state law, any vehicle or combination over 10,000 lb gross must stop at an open weigh station or temporary truck check, and skipping one is a Class 2 misdemeanor. Mobile teams set up pop-up roadside checks on main truck routes, and also work low-volume roads at harvest and during construction. Source

Power only

Distribution centers and plants along I-29 and I-90 put preloaded trailers on the market. We confirm the trailer, the pickup number and the dock hours before you go.

How we dispatch here

  • Coming in from Minnesota on I-90 or from Iowa on I-29, expect a port of entry: the Sioux Falls port at the Minnesota line or the Jefferson port at the Iowa line, where trucks over 10,000 lb must stop when open
  • From February 15 to April 30 we check state and county load limits before booking heavy loads off the interstates
  • In winter we watch SD511 for I-90 and I-29 closures and move appointments early when a storm is coming
  • For your break, we look at the Beaver Creek rest area on I-90 eastbound, which has 21 truck spaces
  • Expect mobile roadside checks on main truck routes, more often at harvest
