Truck dispatch in South Dakota
South Dakota is farm and ranch country with two main interstates. Grain, sunflowers and cattle lead its freight, and Sioux Falls is the main reload market. We plan South Dakota loads around harvest, spring thaw and long empty miles.

Where the freight is in South Dakota
Main corridors
The interstates most of our South Dakota loads run on: I-90, I-29, I-229, US-12, US-14, US-83, US-281.
I-90 crosses the state from Minnesota through Sioux Falls, Mitchell, Chamberlain and Rapid City to Wyoming. I-29 runs north-south along the eastern edge from Iowa through Sioux Falls, Brookings and Watertown to North Dakota. US-12, US-14 and US-212 cross the north and center, and US-83 and US-281 run north-south through farm and ranch country.
Freight and seasons
Corn, soybeans, wheat, sunflowers and hay lead the crops, and cattle and hogs are big too. Grain moves after the fall harvest and from storage through the year, and livestock and feed move all year. Winter storms can close I-90 and I-29, and spring thaw brings lower weights on many state and county roads.
South Dakota rules to know
Every interstate carrier needs a USDOT number, MC authority, UCR and, for most semis, IRP plates and an IFTA license. On top of that:
Farm freight rankings
USDA NASS ranks South Dakota No. 2 in sunflower production, No. 3 in oats, No. 5 in beef cows and spring wheat, No. 6 in corn for grain and No. 9 in soybeans for 2024 and early 2025. Source
Interstate speed limit
No one may drive faster than 80 mph on South Dakota interstates, unless a lower speed zone is posted. The law sets the same limit for trucks and cars. Source
Weigh stations
Any single or combination vehicle over 10,000 lb gross must stop at an open state weigh station or temporary truck check. Rental trucks must stop too. Recreational vehicles and motor coaches are exempt. Skipping an open station is a Class 2 misdemeanor. Source
Spring load restrictions
Highway authorities may restrict loads any time from February 15 to April 30 to protect roads during the spring thaw. State highway restrictions are posted on sdtruckinfo.sd.gov and SD511 under CVO Restrictions. County road limits are set and enforced by each county, not the state. Source

How we dispatch here
- From mid-February to April we check state and county load limits before booking heavy loads off the interstates.
- We plan grain loads around the fall harvest and confirm elevator hours before you go.
- In winter we watch SD511 for I-90 and I-29 closures and move appointments early when a storm is coming.
- Sioux Falls is the best reload point, so we try to route your next load through it.
Pricing
