Freight in Minneapolis
Minneapolis is the larger of the Twin Cities and the center of Minnesota's biggest distribution market. MnDOT's 2024 freight plan says about 60% of the state's manufacturers are in the Twin Cities and surrounding metro counties, led by food, industrial machinery and instruments. Its list of the state's largest wholesale companies includes General Mills in Golden Valley, Bluestem Brands (Fingerhut) and Emerson in Eden Prairie, and Manheim's auto auction in Maple Grove.
Rail and air freight meet trucks here too. CPKC's Shoreham Yard in northeast Minneapolis, BNSF's Midway Yard in St. Paul and Union Pacific's Twin Cities Intermodal Terminal are three of the state's four intermodal ramps. Minneapolis-St. Paul International handles about 95% of Minnesota's air cargo, and MnDOT says Amazon is its fastest-growing cargo operator. The Pine Bend refinery south of St. Paul produces 335,000 barrels a day.

What we book, by truck type
Dry van
Food, consumer goods and wholesale freight move out of Twin Cities warehouses every day. We line up reloads close to the metro so you're not running empty to Chicago or Fargo.
Reefer
Packaged and frozen food is one of Minnesota's biggest wholesale categories, so reefers stay busy. In winter we also plan for protect-from-freeze loads.
Flatbed
Industrial machinery, building materials and steel move on flatbeds around the metro. We check securement, tarp needs, permits and spring load limits before we book.
Box truck
Retail and final-mile freight across Minneapolis, St. Paul and the suburbs suits 26-foot box trucks.
Power only
Preloaded trailers and drop-and-hook freight out of Twin Cities distribution centers work well for power only units.
How we dispatch here
- From March into April we check MnDOT's spring load restriction dates for the Metro zone before booking heavy loads off the interstates; in 2026 they ran March 3 to April 20
- Many cities in the Twin Cities metro ban on-street truck parking, and MnDOT's field survey found Elm Creek rest area on I-94 over capacity at night, so we plan your stop before you roll
- We time pickups and deliveries around rush hour on I-35W, I-94 and I-494, where MnDOT finds truck travel times least reliable
- Eastbound on I-94 you pass the St. Croix weigh station near Stillwater, and the Hudson scale just inside Wisconsin, so we make sure your paperwork and weights are in order
- Interstate carriers only need their USDOT number and MC. Loads that start and end in Minnesota need a MnDOT Motor Carrier of Property certificate
State rules, permits and taxes are on our Minnesota dispatch page.
