Freight in Milwaukee
Milwaukee is Wisconsin's largest city and one of the Midwest's big manufacturing centers, about 90 miles north of Chicago on I-94. Rockwell Automation's global headquarters on South Second Street includes manufacturing and supply chain operations, Harley-Davidson is based on Juneau Avenue and builds motorcycle powertrains in Menomonee Falls, and Molson Coors brews and packages beer in the city. Komatsu broke ground in 2020 on a headquarters and mining equipment manufacturing campus in the Harbor District, and Generac makes generators in Eagle and Whitewater to the west.
Port Milwaukee moved about 3.5 million tons in 2019: asphalt, cement, fertilizer, grain, salt, steel, scrap, oversize machinery and wind energy parts. A state-designated high-wide route keeps a path open for large equipment from West Allis to the port. General Mitchell International Airport handled more than 75% of Wisconsin's air cargo in 2019. WisDOT's 2023 freight plan lists Wisconsin's three intermodal ramps in Arcadia, Chippewa Falls and New Richmond, none of them near Milwaukee.

What we book, by truck type
Dry van
Factories and distribution centers around Milwaukee ship parts, finished goods and consumer products. We look for reloads close to the city so you're not deadheading back from Chicago.
Reefer
Beer, food and Wisconsin dairy keep reefers moving out of the Milwaukee area. We confirm temperatures and appointment times on every load.
Flatbed
Machinery, mining equipment parts, steel and port cargo move on flatbeds and step decks. We check securement, tarp needs, permits and spring thaw limits before we book.
Box truck
Retail and final-mile freight around Milwaukee, Waukesha and Racine suits 26-foot box trucks.
Power only
Preloaded trailers and drop-and-hook freight out of Milwaukee-area plants and warehouses work well for power only units.
How we dispatch here
- We time loads around the I-41 and I-94 bottlenecks at the Zoo Interchange and on the west side, where WisDOT measures the worst truck delays in the state
- From early March to early May, spring thaw rules suspend most overweight permits and keep permitted loads off Class II highways, so we check before booking heavy freight
- Northbound from Illinois you hit the Kenosha scale on I-94, just past the state line, so we make sure your paperwork and weights are in order
- WisDOT finds the state's greatest truck parking demand in Milwaukee County, so we plan your stop before you roll
- Interstate carriers only need their USDOT number and MC. For-hire loads that stay inside Wisconsin need Wisconsin Intrastate Local Cartage authority
State rules, permits and taxes are on our Wisconsin dispatch page.
Pricing
a percentage of the load's gross, quoted for your truck and lanes, charged only on loads we book. No contract, and your first load is free.
