Freight in Cheyenne
Cheyenne is where I-25 from Denver meets I-80, the main truck route across southern Wyoming. WYDOT's 2023 numbers show about 7,000 trucks a day on I-80 between Otto Road and WY 222 on the west side of town, half of the roughly 14,000 vehicles there. Between I-25 and I-180 the count is about 7,000 trucks out of 20,700 vehicles, and east toward Hillsdale it's about 5,000 trucks out of 10,700. On I-25 just south of the I-80 interchange, WYDOT counted about 4,400 trucks a day out of 22,300 vehicles. All figures add both directions.
Local freight comes from distribution centers and plants on the edges of town. Cheyenne LEADS, the local economic development group, announced a Walmart distribution center beside I-80 on Round Top Road (stores served from 2007), a Lowe's regional distribution center serving more than 70 stores in the central and western U.S., and Sierra Trading Post's fulfillment center in the Cheyenne Business Parkway, with about 700 workers and more than 1,200 in peak season. Magpul moved its manufacturing, distribution and shipping to Cheyenne, Eagle Claw built a 115,000 sq ft plant, and rail-served sites at Swan Ranch hold Searing Industries' steel tubing mill and Dr. Elsey's Precious Cat litter plant. HF Sinclair runs a renewable diesel unit (6,000 barrels a day) on soybean oil and animal fats, and Dyno Nobel makes ammonium nitrate.

Main routes and truck traffic
The highways most loads in and out of Cheyenne run on: I-80, I-25, I-180, US 85, US 30 (Lincolnway), US 87, College Drive (WY 212).
I-80 runs west over the Laramie Range to Laramie, Rawlins, Rock Springs and Salt Lake City, and east to Pine Bluffs, the Nebraska line, North Platte and Omaha. I-25 runs south to Fort Collins and Denver and north to Wheatland, Casper and Buffalo, where it meets I-90. I-180 and US 85 cut through the middle of town, US 85 heads north toward Torrington, and College Drive (WY 212) loops around the south and east sides between I-25 and I-80.
Wind and snow are the trap. Since 2023 WYDOT has used weight-based wind closures, with the minimum gross weight posted on signs and on wyoroad.info, and enclosed trailers, box trucks and cattle haulers are included. Under a Level 2 chain law, trucks chain at least two drive wheels on the same drive axle, and the fine is $250, or $750 if it causes a closure. WYDOT data for 2018 to 2022 tied 54% of commercial vehicle crashes on I-80 to winter weather.

WYDOT's 2021 rest area map shows the Summit, Pine Bluffs and Cheyenne rest areas but no space counts, and rest areas are for temporary rest only. Source
In 2023 WYDOT's I-80 Winter Freight project added nearly 200 truck spaces between Laramie and Rawlins, at Quealy Dome (mile 290) and the Fort Steele rest area (mile 228), about 100 at each end of a new passing-lane section. Source
Weigh stations
The Wyoming Highway Patrol lists three ports of entry in Cheyenne: on I-80, on I-25 and on US 85. All commercial vehicles, livestock haulers and deliveries into Wyoming must stop at ports of entry, and you must stop whenever a regulatory sign or an officer tells you to. A PrePass truck that gets an in-cab green light may keep going, unless it hauls livestock or an oversize or overweight load. Source
The Patrol's page lists phone numbers but not mileposts or hours, so we don't promise when a port is open. WYDOT has closed the I-25 port for a day for paving before, as in May 2023. Source

What we book, by truck type
Dry van
Walmart, Lowe's, Sierra Trading Post and Magpul ship from Cheyenne. Reloads in Wyoming are thin, so we line up the next load in Denver or along the Front Range before you deliver.
Reefer
Grocery freight for the Walmart distribution center and stores across the region moves by reefer. We confirm the temperature and the appointment, and in winter we ask about protect-from-freeze loads too.
Flatbed
Steel tubing from Searing, data center construction and oilfield equipment keep flatbeds busy. Empty flatbeds usually aren't under wind closures, but we check wyoroad.info before you roll.
Power only
Distribution centers along I-80 put preloaded trailers on the market. We confirm the trailer, the pickup number and the dock hours before you go.
Box truck
Retail and parcel deliveries across Cheyenne and the run south to Fort Collins and Denver mean steady box truck work. Box trucks are among the first vehicles stopped by wind closures, so we plan around them.
How we dispatch here
- Before you head west on I-80 over the Laramie Range, we check wyoroad.info for closures, chain laws and the posted wind-closure weight
- Light or empty dry vans and box trucks get extra attention in high wind, since weight-based closures can stop them
- Expect to stop at a Cheyenne port of entry: the Highway Patrol lists ports on I-80, I-25 and US 85, and only a PrePass green light lets you keep going
- For your break, we line up one of the big truck stops east of town on I-80 early, before a closure fills them
- During Cheyenne Frontier Days in late July, we allow extra time for traffic in town
State rules, permits and taxes are on our Wyoming dispatch page.
Pricing
A percentage of the load's gross, quoted for your truck and lanes, charged only on loads we book. No contract, and your first load is free.

Why does I-80 near Cheyenne close to my truck?
WYDOT closes roads to light, high-profile vehicles in high wind, using a minimum gross weight posted on signs and on wyoroad.info. Light or empty enclosed trailers and box trucks can be under it. Winter storms also close I-80 and I-25, so we check before you leave.
Do I have to stop at the ports of entry in Cheyenne?

The 2027 event runs July 23 to August 1. In 2023 it drew 283,493 visits, so we plan for extra traffic in town.
