Freight in Reno
Reno sits on I-80 just east of the Sierra Nevada, on the main truck route between Northern California and Salt Lake City. Its warehouses and plants ship west to Sacramento and the Bay Area and east across Nevada. The Nevada employment department's 2026 lists put LEGACY Supply Chain Services and Hamilton Company among Reno's largest employers, with Arrow Electronics and a JCPenney distribution center close behind, and SanMar and Swift Transportation among the largest in Sparks.
East of Sparks, the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center in Storey County covers about 102,000 acres, according to NDOT. Tesla's Gigafactory Nevada is the county's largest employer, with 5,000 to 9,999 workers; Panasonic makes lithium-ion batteries there, and Walmart, Mars Petcare and James Hardie also run sites in the county. Union Pacific's Sparks yard is home to manufacturing, trucking and warehousing companies, and Reno-Tahoe International Airport handled about 83.6 million pounds of air cargo in 2025.

Main routes and truck traffic
The highways most loads in and out of Reno run on: I-80, I-580, US 395, US 50, USA Parkway (SR 439), Pyramid Hwy (SR 445).
I-80 runs west over Donner Pass to Truckee, Sacramento and the Bay Area, and east through Sparks, the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center and Fernley toward Winnemucca, Elko and Salt Lake City. I-580 and US 395 run south to Carson City, and US 395 north toward Susanville and Oregon. Most loads we book out of Reno go west or east on I-80.
NDOT says about 20% of the traffic on I-80 between Vista Boulevard and USA Parkway is trucks, more than 80% of the industrial center's workers use that stretch, and crashes there have nearly doubled. It plans to widen those 13 miles from two to three lanes each way. Westbound, NDOT's 2022 freight plan says winter storms that close I-80 in the Sierra make the truck parking shortage worse, and that Donner Pass lacks emergency truck parking during closures.

What we book, by truck type
Dry van
Distribution centers in Reno, Sparks and the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center ship consumer goods, electronics and apparel. We look for reloads close to Reno so you're not deadheading across Nevada.
Reefer
Grocery distribution and California produce heading east on I-80 give reefers work. We check temperatures, appointment times and Donner Pass weather on every load.
Flatbed
Building products, plant equipment and machinery move in and out of the industrial parks east of Sparks. We check securement, tarp needs and permits before we book.
Box truck
Regional retail and final-mile freight around Reno, Sparks and Carson City suits 26-foot box trucks.
Power only
Preloaded trailers and drop-and-hook freight out of Reno-Sparks warehouses work well for power only units.
How we dispatch here
- From November through April we check Caltrans chain controls on I-80 before booking a westbound load, and make sure you carry link chains. Trucks without chains get turned back at Caltrans screening points
- CHP allows chaining up only at designated areas on I-80, such as Boca, Truckee and Kingvale, and can cite drivers who stop anywhere else
- Westbound, you pass the CHP commercial vehicle facility in Truckee, open 24 hours, and the California agriculture border station east of town, so we make sure your paperwork and equipment are in order
- NDOT counts a shortage of about 250 truck spaces in the Reno-Sparks area, so we plan your stop before you roll, especially when a storm may close Donner Pass
- Interstate carriers only need their USDOT number and MC. Loads that start and end in Nevada need intrastate authority from the Nevada DMV
State rules, permits and taxes are on our Nevada dispatch page.
Pricing
a percentage of the load's gross, quoted for your truck and lanes, charged only on loads we book. No contract, and your first load is free.

Questions carriers ask
Are there loads out of Reno?
Yes. Distribution centers in Reno and Sparks, Tesla's Gigafactory and the other plants in the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center, and Union Pacific's Sparks yard keep freight moving both ways on I-80. We search the major load boards and our broker contacts for loads that fit your lanes and minimum rate.
How many trucking companies are based in Reno?
FMCSA's company census lists 473 active interstate trucking companies with a Reno address as of October 2026. 321 of them haul for hire, and about six in ten of those run one truck or less. Sparks carriers are counted separately.
Do I need chains to haul from Reno to California?
In winter, yes. When Caltrans posts chain controls over Donner Pass, all vehicles over 6,500 lb must chain up, even at the lowest level, and snow tires don't count. Heavy trucks usually need link chains on at least the main drive axle. CHP advises carrying chains from November 1 to April 30.
Where can I park a truck overnight near Reno?
NDOT's 2018 truck parking inventory counted 7 truck spaces westbound and 6 eastbound at the I-80 Exit 5 truck parking at Mogul, west of Reno, and 5 at the Wadsworth rest area (I-80 westbound, Exit 42). NDOT's 2022 freight plan says the Reno-Sparks area is short about 250 truck spaces, so we plan your stop before you roll.
Is there a weigh station near Reno?
Nevada has no permanent fixed inspection facilities; the Nevada Highway Patrol uses mobile teams and temporary sites. Westbound, CHP runs a commercial vehicle facility on I-80 in Truckee, open 24 hours, and trucks must enter when it's open unless they're enrolled in an approved electronic bypass program.
What freight is seasonal around Reno?
Winter is the big one: chain controls over Donner Pass slow or stop westbound freight, and CHP advises carrying chains November 1 to April 30. Hot August Nights fills downtown Reno and Sparks each summer; the 2026 event ran July 31 to August 9.
Do I need Nevada authority?
Not if every load is interstate. If a load starts and ends in Nevada, you need intrastate authority from the Nevada DMV, and Nevada requires a USDOT number for trucks of 26,001 lb or more even inside the state.
