Freight in Sacramento
California's Employment Development Department lists Intel in Folsom (5,000 to 9,999 workers) as the biggest of Sacramento County's major employers, with an Apple distribution center in Elk Grove, Aerojet Rocketdyne and Ampac Fine Chemicals in Rancho Cordova, each with 1,000 to 4,999. Just across the river in Yolo County, the EDD list includes a Target distribution center and the Pacific Coast Producers cannery in Woodland, a UPS customer center and FedEx Freight in West Sacramento, Clark Pacific's precast concrete plant and Mariani Nut Co. in Winters. That's a mix of retail, parcel, food and building materials freight.
Caltrans' 2023 freight plan calls the Sacramento region the state's northernmost freeway hub for freight, where I-5, I-80, US 50, SR 51 and SR 99 meet. It says trucks haul about 68% of the region's freight tonnage and more than 95% of goods that start or end there. Union Pacific's J.R. Davis Yard in Roseville is one of the state's two big rail classification yards, UPS and FedEx fly cargo through Sacramento International, DHL and UPS use Mather Airport, and the Port of West Sacramento handles farm and industrial products. Rice is the big field crop: the California Rice Commission counts about 500,000 acres of rice in the Sacramento Valley.

The highways most loads in and out of Sacramento run on: I-5, I-80, US 50, SR 99, SR 51, Business 80, SR 65, SR 16, SR 160.
I-5 runs north through Woodland toward Redding and Portland and south toward Stockton and Los Angeles. US 50 heads east through Rancho Cordova and Folsom toward Placerville and Lake Tahoe, and SR 99 runs south through Elk Grove and Lodi to Stockton and Fresno. SR 51, the Capital City Freeway, links US 50 and I-80 across the city, and SR 65 runs north from Roseville.
Caltrans' 2024 counts show about 25,300 trucks a day on I-5 at Laguna Boulevard in Elk Grove (25% of traffic), about 13,400 on I-80 where it meets I-5, about 13,700 on SR 99 at Elk Grove Boulevard and about 8,500 on US 50 at 65th Street. Truckers named the I-80 interchanges at Mace Boulevard, US 50 and SR 51 as the worst.

What we book, by truck type
Dry van
Retail, parcel and electronics distribution keep dry vans busy all year. We look for reloads close to Sacramento so you don't deadhead to the Bay Area.
Reefer
Canned and fresh food, nuts and rice move out of the valley. We check temps and appointments, and your reefer unit must be reported in CARB's ARBER system.
Flatbed
Precast concrete, building materials and construction equipment move across the region. We check securement, tarps and permits before we book.
Power only
Distribution centers in Elk Grove and Woodland put preloaded trailers on the market. We confirm the trailer meets California rules before you hook.
Box truck
Parcel, grocery and final-mile deliveries across Sacramento, Roseville and Elk Grove keep 26-foot box trucks busy.
How we dispatch here
- Before your first California load we confirm a 2010 or newer engine, Clean Truck Check compliance and, for reefers, ARBER reporting
- Caltrans counts the Sacramento area about 325 truck spaces short at the peak hour, so we lock in your overnight stop before you roll
- On loads to Reno we check QuickMap for chain controls on I-80 over Donner Pass; trucks without chains are turned back
- We avoid tight appointments that put you on the I-80, US 50 and SR 51 interchanges or the US 50/SR 99 junction at rush hour
- Rice harvest runs mostly from mid-September to November, so we look for ag loads early in the fall
State rules, permits and taxes are on our California dispatch page.
Pricing
a percentage of the load's gross, quoted for your truck and lanes, charged only on loads we book. No contract, and your first load is free.

Questions carriers ask
Are there dry van loads out of Sacramento?
Yes. EDD's major employer lists include an Apple distribution center in Elk Grove, a Target distribution center in Woodland and UPS and FedEx Freight in West Sacramento, and Caltrans' freight plan says trucks carry more than 95% of goods that start or end in the region. We search the major load boards and our broker contacts for loads that fit your lanes and minimum rate.
How many trucking companies are based in Sacramento?
FMCSA's company census lists 2,403 active interstate trucking companies with a Sacramento address as of October 2026. 2,288 of them haul for hire, and more than two out of three of those run one truck or less.
Can my out-of-state truck haul loads in Sacramento?
Yes, if it meets California's rules: diesel trucks over 14,000 lb GVWR need a 2010 or newer engine and must comply with Clean Truck Check even if they're registered in another state, and reefer units must be reported in CARB's ARBER system. We check before we book.
Where can I park a truck overnight near Sacramento?
Caltrans' closest rest areas are Elkhorn on I-5 southbound near Sacramento International Airport (14 truck/bus spaces), Dunnigan on I-5 north of Woodland (12 each direction) and Gold Run on I-80 in the foothills (24 eastbound, 16 westbound). Counts are from 2011. Caltrans' 2022 study rates the Sacramento area a very high priority, about 325 spaces short at the peak hour, so we plan your stop early.
Are there weigh stations near Sacramento?
Yes. Caltrans lists the Antelope platform scales on I-80 in both directions, about 6 miles west of SR 65 in Roseville. West of the valley, CHP's Cordelia facility on I-80 in Fairfield runs enforcement 24/7, and the Camino scale checks westbound US 50. Caltrans lists PrePass and Drivewyze as bypass systems in California.
What's the busiest truck route around Sacramento?
I-5 south of downtown. Caltrans counted about 25,300 trucks a day at Laguna Boulevard in Elk Grove in 2024, a quarter of all traffic. I-80 at I-5 and SR 99 in Elk Grove each carry more than 13,000.
Do I need chains to run I-80 to Reno?
Often in winter. When chain controls are posted over Donner Pass, Caltrans says heavy trucks usually need link-type chains on at least the main drive axle, and trucks without chains must turn back. California has no set chain-law dates, so we check road conditions before we book.
What freight is seasonal around Sacramento?
California rice is planted mostly in May and harvested from mid-September to November. Winter wheat comes off in June and early July, almonds are harvested August through October and corn for grain in October.
