Freight in Portland

Portland sits where I-5 meets I-84 on the Columbia River, so freight comes through it from Seattle, California, Idaho and the farms of the Willamette Valley and eastern Oregon. The Port of Portland's public marine terminals handled 12.4 million metric tons of cargo in 2024, including 381,485 vehicles and 98,899 TEUs of containers. Terminal 6 is Oregon's only international container terminal; furniture and tires topped its imports in 2024 and hay and animal feed its exports.

Daimler Truck North America has its headquarters on North Channel Avenue and builds Western Star and Freightliner trucks at its Portland plant, open since 1969. Intel's Hillsboro campus, west of the city, is its largest concentration of facilities in the world. Oregon farms add seasonal reefer and dry van freight: the state grows more than 99% of U.S. hazelnuts and about 30% of U.S. Christmas trees, leads the nation in grass seed and sells 98% of that seed out of state.

Main routes and truck traffic

The highways most loads in and out of Portland run on: I-5, I-84, I-205, I-405, US 26, US 30.

I-5 runs north across the Columbia River to Vancouver, WA and Seattle, and south through Salem, Eugene and Medford into California. I-84 heads east up the Columbia River Gorge toward Hermiston, Boise and Salt Lake City. I-205 loops around the east side past PDX and makes a second river crossing, US 26 runs west to Hillsboro, and US 30 follows the river northwest past the marine terminals. Most loads we book out of Portland use I-5 or I-84.

The Interstate Bridge Replacement Program, run by ODOT and WSDOT, counted more than 13,500 trucks a day on the I-5 Interstate Bridge in 2019, among more than 143,000 vehicles each weekday. It ranks the bridge as the worst truck bottleneck in Oregon and Washington and 23rd worst in the country. When ODOT closes I-5 through central Portland, as it did for repairs in the Rose Quarter in fall 2026, it asks freight to use I-205 through the region.

Reefer

Oregon blueberries from June to September, cherries in summer, pears from August and storage pears into the next June give reefers steady work. We check temperatures and appointment times on every load.

How we dispatch here

  • Before the first Oregon load, we confirm your weight-mile tax account or have you buy a temporary pass ($9 plus the tax per mile, good for 10 days)
  • Oregon has no fixed chain season, so in winter we check TripCheck for chain signs on I-84 in the Gorge and on I-5 to the south before dispatching
  • When I-5 is closed or jammed through central Portland, we route through traffic on I-205, the way ODOT asks freight to go
  • Drivers in ODOT's truck parking study rated the Portland area as the hardest place in Oregon to find parking, so we plan your stop before you roll
  • Interstate carriers only need their USDOT number and MC plus the weight-mile tax. Loads that stay inside Oregon need a state for-hire permit

State rules, permits and taxes are on our Oregon dispatch page.

Fleetorica is a dispatch service, not a broker or carrier. We book loads under your authority, from Portland and anywhere in the lower 48, and you approve every load.
