Freight in Albany
Albany sits where the New York State Thruway's I-87 from New York City meets I-90, which runs west to Buffalo and east to Boston. The Adirondack Northway (I-87) heads north to Montreal. The New York Department of Labor says the region's spot at the meeting of I-90 and I-87 drives its logistics role: warehousing jobs grew 84% between 2018 and 2023, from 3,200 to 5,900. The region's 2016 freight plan counted 103 million tons of freight in 2012, with growth to 173 million expected by 2040, and a 2023 truck parking study found 953 of the region's 1,003 truck spaces in use at the overnight peak.
The Port of Albany-Rensselaer has almost 4,200 feet of wharf in Albany, 350,000 sq ft of covered storage and its own switching railroad owned by CSX and CP. It handles about a quarter million tons of project and heavy-lift cargo, forest products, steel scrap and grain; in 2025 that included more than 340 miles of power cable and over 150 wind turbine parts built at GE Vernova in Schenectady. Port tenants include an Ardent Mills flour mill, a Cargill animal feed warehouse, Mohawk's fine paper distribution center, a Buckeye fuel terminal and scrap yards. Beyond the port, the region's large private employers include GlobalFoundries' chip plant in Malta, Regeneron's drug manufacturing in Rensselaer, and the Golub (Price Chopper/Market 32) and Hannaford grocery chains.

Main routes and truck traffic
The highways most loads in and out of Albany run on: I-87 (NYS Thruway), I-87 (Adirondack Northway), I-90, I-88, I-787, I-890, US 9, US 20.
The Thruway (I-87) runs south from Albany down the Hudson Valley to New York City, then turns west as I-90 past Schenectady toward Utica, Syracuse and Buffalo. I-90 also runs east from Albany across the Hudson and joins the Thruway's Berkshire section to the Massachusetts line and the Mass Pike to Boston. The Northway (I-87) leaves I-90 in Albany and runs north past Saratoga Springs and Glens Falls to Plattsburgh and the Canadian border at Champlain. I-88 runs southwest from the Schenectady area to Binghamton, and I-787 follows the river past the port and downtown.
The region's freight plan names I-87 and I-90 congestion, toll and interchange bottlenecks and the Northway's Exit 16 overpass in Wilton as problem spots. Its truck parking study says spaces fill up most at the east end of I-90 toward Massachusetts, where demand at the Love's and Onvo truck stops in Canaan regularly tops capacity on some weeknights, and at the Wilton Travel Plaza on the Northway.

What we book, by truck type
Dry van
Warehouses along I-87 and I-90, paper and grocery distribution keep dry vans busy. We look for the reload in New York City, New Jersey, Boston or Montreal before you deliver.
Reefer
Grocery chains like Price Chopper/Market 32 and Hannaford and New York's apple crop move refrigerated freight. We confirm the temperature and the appointment, and in winter we ask about protect-from-freeze loads too.
Flatbed
Project and heavy-lift cargo, steel, forest products and wind turbine parts move through the Port of Albany. We check securement, tarps and oversize permits before we book.
Power only
Distribution centers along the Thruway and the Northway put preloaded trailers on the market. We confirm the trailer, the pickup number and the dock hours before you go.
Box truck
Retail, grocery and parcel deliveries across Albany, Schenectady, Troy and Saratoga Springs mean steady box truck work, including final-mile deliveries.
How we dispatch here
- Trucks over 18,000 lb need a New York Highway Use Tax (HUT) certificate and decal, and we count your non-Thruway miles for it

- For a shower or laundry, the Thruway's Pattersonville service area (I-90 westbound, between exits 26 and 27) has a drivers' lounge with both
- For port pickups, we confirm the tenant, the pickup number and any heavy-lift or oversize permits before you roll
- We avoid tight appointments that put you on I-87 or I-90 around Albany at rush hour
State rules, permits and taxes are on our New York dispatch page.
Pricing
A percentage of the load's gross, quoted for your truck and lanes, charged only on loads we book. No contract, and your first load is free.
