Freight in Syracuse
Syracuse is where I-81, the north-south route from Binghamton and Pennsylvania to Watertown and the Canadian border, crosses the New York State Thruway (I-90) between Buffalo and Albany. The New York Department of Labor says that location, close to Canada and to the Port of Oswego on Lake Ontario, makes the region a natural fit for warehousing. Warehousing and storage was the fastest-growing major industry in Central New York from 2020 to 2025, up 195.5% to 6,500 jobs, as several Amazon distribution centers opened.
Onondaga County's largest employers are hospitals and universities, but the list also includes Wegmans (3,320 workers), Lockheed Martin (2,700), Tessy Plastics (1,900), UPS (1,250), Baxter (1,200) and furniture maker L. & J.G. Stickley (900). Byrne Dairy, founded in 1933, runs four production plants in Central New York and has been expanding its Ultra Dairy plant in the county. The biggest project is Micron's semiconductor complex in Clay, where the first concrete has been poured; Micron says it could build up to four fabs there over 20-plus years.

Main routes and truck traffic
The highways most loads in and out of Syracuse run on: I-81, I-90 (NYS Thruway), I-690, I-481, NY 481, NY 5, US 11.
I-81 runs north to Watertown and the Thousand Islands crossing into Canada and south through Cortland to Binghamton and Pennsylvania. The Thruway (I-90) passes just north of the city, west to Rochester and Buffalo and east to Utica and Albany. I-690 crosses the city east to west, and I-481 loops around the east side; NY 481 continues north to Oswego. On September 22, 2026, the governor announced that the FHWA had approved renaming I-481 as the new I-81 and turning the old I-81 through downtown into Business Loop 81.
NYSDOT says drivers shouldn't expect immediate changes: it's still working on a changeover plan, and the 1.4-mile I-81 viaduct downtown will eventually come down for a street-level Community Grid. No date has been set for the switch or the teardown, so we check 511NY before routing you through downtown.

What we book, by truck type
Dry van
Distribution centers and plants around Syracuse ship east and west on the Thruway and south on I-81. We look for the reload before you deliver so you're not deadheading back from Albany or Buffalo.
Reefer
Dairy plants and grocery distribution keep reefers busy all year. We confirm the temperature, the pulp and the appointment before we book.
Flatbed
Construction at Micron's site in Clay and the I-81 project move steel, pipe and equipment. We check securement, tarps and any oversize permit before you go.
Power only
Warehouses along the Thruway and I-81 put preloaded trailers on the market. We confirm the trailer, the pickup number and the dock hours before you go.
Box truck
Retail, parcel and furniture deliveries around Syracuse suit 26-foot box trucks. We look for loads that keep you close to home.
