Freight in Columbia

Columbia sits in the middle of South Carolina, where I-26 between the Upstate and Charleston crosses I-20 between Atlanta and Florence, and I-77 runs north to Charlotte. SCDOT's freight plan lists I-26 from Columbia south to I-95 among the state's heaviest truck corridors. Its 2025 counts show about 143,900 vehicles a day on I-26 between St. Andrews Road and I-20 and about 127,100 on I-20 between Broad River Road and Monticello Road. The I-20/I-26/I-126 interchange area is being rebuilt in SCDOT's five-phase Carolina Crossroads project.

The state's lists of the 20 largest employers in Richland and Lexington counties include Amazon, Michelin, Westinghouse, Eaton, Amick Farms, Flextronics, Publix, Walmart and UPS. Michelin has built passenger and light truck tires in Lexington since 1981. Westinghouse's fuel plant in Hopkins, southeast of the city, has made nuclear fuel since 1968 and says that fuel generates about 10% of U.S. electricity. Amick Farms, founded in Batesburg in 1941, produces more than 1.4 billion pounds of chicken a year. FN America makes small arms in Richland County. Norfolk Southern runs a bulk rail-to-truck terminal southwest of Columbia for chemicals and plastics, and FedEx and UPS fly cargo at Columbia Metropolitan Airport.

I-26 runs northwest through Irmo toward Spartanburg and Greenville and southeast past the airport toward Orangeburg and Charleston. I-20 swings around the north side of the city, west to Augusta and Atlanta and east to Camden and Florence. I-77 starts at I-26 south of the city and runs up the east side past Fort Jackson toward Rock Hill and Charlotte. I-126 carries traffic from I-26 into downtown, and US 1, US 21, US 378 and US 76 fan out to Lexington, Cayce and the industrial areas.

SCDOT's freight plan names the I-26 interchange with I-20 as the main morning bottleneck, and the I-126, I-20 and St. Andrews Road interchanges plus Broad River Road (Exit 101) as the evening ones. It also notes I-77 southbound backing up near Forest Drive on Thursday mornings during Fort Jackson's weekly graduations. Truck parking is short too: SCDOT's 2022 study lists I-77 between I-26 and Fort Jackson Boulevard as a high-need corridor and suggests reopening the closed I-20 parking areas at mile 48.5 in Lexington County for trucks.

Dry van

Tires, retail and e-commerce freight keep dry vans busy around Columbia. We look for the reload in the Midlands so you're not deadheading to Charlotte or Atlanta.

Poultry from Lexington County, grocery distribution and the state's summer and fall harvests keep reefers moving. We confirm the temperature, the pulp and the appointment before we book.

How we dispatch here

  • We keep pickups away from the I-26 and I-20 interchange at rush hour, the area's main truck bottleneck while Carolina Crossroads is under construction
  • On Thursday mornings we leave extra time on I-77 near Fort Jackson, where SCDOT has seen weekly graduation traffic back up southbound
  • Rest areas around Columbia fill up, so we line up your overnight stop before you roll
  • Expect State Transport Police scales on I-20 westbound near Lexington and on I-26 westbound in Richland County
  • Interstate carriers need nothing extra from South Carolina. For-hire loads that stay inside the state need an SCDMV Certificate of Compliance
