Freight in Laredo
Laredo lives on cross-border trade. BTS counts about 2,945,000 trucks entering the U.S. at Laredo in 2025, more than two and a half times as many as Detroit, the next-busiest land port. The Texas Comptroller says Port Laredo handled $339.5 billion in trade in 2024, 32% of all Texas trade, and the top goods both ways are vehicle parts, machinery and electronics.
Of the roughly 115,900 jobs in the Laredo metro, about 19,700 are in transportation, warehousing and utilities, about one in six (BLS, August 2026, preliminary). Laredo EDC counts 1,027 trade-handling and transportation businesses, from customs brokers to cross-border drayage carriers that haul between Laredo and Nuevo Laredo. Union Pacific and CPKC both run rail across the border here, so freight transloads between truck and train too.

Main routes and truck traffic
The highways most loads in and out of Laredo run on: I-35, US 59, US 83, Loop 20 (Bob Bullock Loop), SH 255.
I-35 runs north from Laredo to San Antonio, Austin and Dallas and on to the Midwest. US 59, the future I-69 corridor, heads northeast toward Houston, and US 83 runs east toward the Rio Grande Valley and Brownsville. Loop 20 runs from the border to I-35 and US 83. Most loads we book out of Laredo go north on I-35.
TxDOT's statewide truck parking study found up to 10,956 trucks a day on I-35 between Laredo and San Antonio, and counted 10 closures on that stretch during the study, mostly from flooding. Texas A&M Transportation Institute ranked Loop 20, from the border to I-35/US 83, the third most congested road in Texas for truck delay per mile (2019). At the World Trade Bridge, TxDOT's border plan found northbound truck crossings take longest in the early afternoon, typically 39 minutes and up to 69.

In the same study, the big truck stops on I-35 at Beltway Parkway and Uniroyal Drive told TxDOT they reach capacity every evening, and TxDOT picked Laredo as one of four Texas areas to measure trucks parked on streets next to neighborhoods. Source

What we book, by truck type
Dry van
Auto parts, machinery and electronics from Mexico load out of Laredo warehouses every day. We look for northbound loads that fit your lanes, and plan a reload so the trip back to the border pays too.
Reefer
Rio Grande Valley citrus from October to May and South Texas onions in spring give reefers work in the region. We check temperatures and appointment times on every load.
Flatbed
Machinery and industrial equipment cross the border for plants on both sides. We check securement, tarp needs and permits before we book.
Power only
Laredo runs on trailers that change hands: preloaded trailers waiting at warehouses and rail yards suit power only units well.
How we dispatch here
- We book northbound loads from Laredo warehouses on the U.S. side. Moving trailers across the bridge is a job for cross-border drayage carriers
- Truck stops on I-35 in Laredo fill up every evening, so we plan your parking before you get there
- We check appointment times with Laredo warehouses before we book, since TxDOT found northbound bridge crossings run slowest in the early afternoon
- When it floods, I-35 between Laredo and San Antonio can close, so we watch DriveTexas and plan around it
- Interstate carriers only need their USDOT number and MC. Loads that start and end in Texas need a TxDMV number for trucks over 26,000 lb
State rules, permits and taxes are on our Texas dispatch page.
Pricing
a percentage of the load's gross, quoted for your truck and lanes, charged only on loads we book. No contract, and your first load is free.

Are there loads out of Laredo?
Yes, lots. About 2.95 million trucks entered the U.S. at Laredo in 2025, more than at any other land port, and most of that freight leaves Laredo warehouses on U.S. trucks headed north on I-35. We search the major load boards and our broker contacts for loads that fit your lanes and minimum rate.
How many trucking companies are based in Laredo?
FMCSA's company census lists 2,291 active interstate trucking companies with a Laredo address as of October 2026. 2,264 of them haul for hire, and about half of those run one truck or less.
Do you dispatch loads across the border into Mexico?
No. We book loads on the U.S. side, usually freight that cross-border drayage carriers have already brought over to Laredo warehouses.
Where can I park a truck overnight near Laredo?
Mostly at private truck stops. TxDOT counted 1,435 truck spaces in its Laredo district, only 76 of them public, and the big truck stops on I-35 in Laredo report filling up every evening. TxDOT's public options north of town are the Travel Information Center on I-35 northbound at mile 18 and the La Salle County rest areas near Cotulla, both with separate truck parking.
Is there a weigh station in Laredo?
We couldn't find a permanent weigh station in Webb County. Texas DPS has run random enhanced safety inspections on commercial vehicles entering Texas at the ports of entry since December 2022.
What's the busiest truck route around Laredo?
I-35. TxDOT's truck parking study found up to 10,956 trucks a day between Laredo and San Antonio. In town, Loop 20 from the border to I-35/US 83 was ranked the third most congested road in Texas for truck delay per mile.
What freight is seasonal around Laredo?
Rio Grande Valley citrus ships October through May and South Texas onions March 1 to July 15. Texas sorghum and cotton harvests run late summer into December. Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, and TxDOT counted flood closures on I-35 between Laredo and San Antonio.
Do I need Texas operating authority?
Not if every load is interstate. If a load starts and ends in Texas and your truck is over 26,000 lb, you need a TxDMV number in addition to your USDOT.
