Freight in San Antonio

San Antonio sits on I-35 between Laredo, the busiest truck port on the Mexico border, and Austin and Dallas to the north. I-10 crosses it on the way from El Paso to Houston, and I-37 runs to Corpus Christi. That makes it both a stop for border freight moving north and a manufacturing and distribution center of its own.

Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas builds Tundras and Sequoias in a 2.2-million-square-foot plant on the south side, with 23 on-site suppliers, and in July 2026 announced a $3.6 billion second assembly line. International builds Class 6–8 diesel and electric trucks at a 900,000-square-foot plant that started production in 2022, and JCB announced a construction equipment plant in 2023. H-E-B is adding a $175 million refrigerated distribution facility at its Foster Road campus in San Antonio. Port San Antonio, a 1,900-acre campus with a runway, the East Kelly Railport and access to I-10, I-35 and I-37, had about 18,000 people working there in 2024.

Main routes and truck traffic

The highways most loads in and out of San Antonio run on: I-35, I-10, I-37, I-410 (Loop 410), Loop 1604, US 90, US 281.

I-35 runs south to Laredo and north to Austin, Dallas and Oklahoma. I-10 heads west through the Hill Country toward El Paso and east through Seguin to Houston, and I-37 runs southeast to Corpus Christi. US 90 goes west toward Del Rio, and US 281 north and south. Loop 410 and Loop 1604 circle the city and reach the airport, Port San Antonio and the warehouse parks. Those corridors carry most of the loads we book out of San Antonio.

TxDOT's 2024 review of the I-35 corridor found about 17,000 trucks a day on average along I-35 in Texas in 2022, with some segments carrying 24,000 to 30,000, and said 19 of Texas' 100 most congested road segments are on I-35. The worst of them are in Austin, Dallas and Fort Worth, so a load north out of San Antonio usually hits its slowest miles there.

What we book, by truck type

Dry van

Auto parts, retail and e-commerce freight keep dry vans busy, along with border freight moving up I-35 from Laredo. We look for reloads close to San Antonio so you're not deadheading out of the metro.

Reefer

Grocery distribution, Rio Grande Valley citrus from October to May and South Texas onions in spring give reefers work. We check temperatures and appointment times on every load.

Flatbed

Construction equipment, electrical gear and plant machinery move in and out of the area's factories. We check securement, tarp needs and permits before we book.

Box truck

Regional retail and final-mile freight around Loop 410 and Loop 1604 suits 26-foot box trucks.

Power only

Preloaded trailers and drop-and-hook freight out of San Antonio warehouses work well for power only units.

How we dispatch here

  • We check I-35 conditions on DriveTexas before routing north, and plan appointment times around Austin and Dallas traffic
  • Eastbound I-10 loads pass the Texas DPS inspection facility at Seguin, mile 620, so we make sure your paperwork and equipment are in order
  • We plan pickups and deliveries near downtown around Fiesta San Antonio, April 15–25, 2027
  • TxDOT lists separate truck parking at the Guadalupe County (I-10) and Medina County (I-35) rest areas but no counts, so we plan your stop before you roll
  • Interstate carriers only need their USDOT number and MC. Loads that start and end in Texas need TxDMV intrastate operating authority

State rules, permits and taxes are on our Texas dispatch page.

Are there dry van loads out of San Antonio?

Yes. Toyota and International truck plants, H-E-B's distribution campus, Amazon's fulfillment centers and border freight coming up I-35 from Laredo keep dry van freight moving all year. We search the major load boards and our broker contacts for loads that fit your lanes and minimum rate.

How many trucking companies are based in San Antonio?

TxDOT's closest rest areas with separate truck parking are on I-10 east of Seguin (eastbound mile 621, westbound mile 622) and on I-35 north of Devine (mile 130, both directions). The Kerr County rest areas on I-10 north of Comfort don't list separate truck parking. TxDOT doesn't publish truck space counts for these sites.

Is there a weigh station near San Antonio?

Yes. Texas DPS runs the Seguin Inspection Facility on I-10 eastbound at mile 620, east of Seguin. It has weigh-in-motion sensors and a 90-foot platform scale that weighs a whole truck at once.

What's the busiest truck route around San Antonio?

Do you book loads to and from Laredo?

Yes. Laredo is south on I-35, and border freight that's already in Laredo warehouses moves north through San Antonio. We book on the U.S. side only, not across the border.

Do I need Texas operating authority?

Not if every load is interstate. If a load starts and ends in Texas, you need TxDMV intrastate operating authority in addition to your USDOT number.
