Freight in Dayton
Dayton sits where I-75, the north-south route from Detroit and Toledo to Cincinnati and Atlanta, crosses I-70 between Indianapolis and Columbus. ODOT's 2025 truck parking study calls the Dayton-Cincinnati-Columbus area Ohio's logistics triangle, within a one-day drive of more than 60% of the U.S. population, and says warehouses and distribution centers cluster around all three cities. The Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce says a 2024 study put the logistics industry's impact on the 14-county region at $3.8 billion.
The freight comes from plants and warehouses. In Moraine, just south of the city, DMAX builds diesel engines for GM's heavy-duty Silverado and Sierra pickups, and Fuyao Glass America makes auto glass in a former GM plant of just under 2.1 million sq ft. MAHLE builds HVAC modules, radiators and engine cooling modules at a 1.2 million sq ft Dayton plant with nearly 1,000 workers, and Green Tokai runs three auto parts plants in Brookville, west on I-70. Crocs ships from a 1,322,000 sq ft distribution center in Dayton, P&G announced a 1 million sq ft distribution center in Union, northwest of the city, in 2014, and Joby Aviation makes propeller blades in Dayton and bought a 728,000 sq ft building in Vandalia in January 2026.

Main routes and truck traffic
The highways most loads in and out of Dayton run on: I-75, I-70, I-675, US 35, OH 4, OH 48, US 40.
I-75 runs north through Vandalia, Troy and Lima to Toledo and Detroit, and south through Miamisburg and Butler County to Cincinnati. I-70 crosses it just north of the city near Dayton International Airport and runs west to Richmond and Indianapolis and east to Springfield and Columbus. I-675 loops around the east side from I-75 near Miamisburg to I-70 near Fairborn. US 35 runs east-west through downtown, and OH 4 heads northeast toward Springfield.
Truck parking is the pinch point. ODOT's 2025 study found parking in and around Dayton, Cincinnati and Columbus at or near 100% full in the overnight peak. Four new truck parking sites opened on the corridors linking Dayton with Cincinnati and Columbus after 2021, and they're already near or at capacity. ODOT is rebuilding the I-75 rest areas in Miami County, north of Dayton, to roughly double their truck spaces.

Truck parking and weigh stations
| Rest area | Where | Truck spaces |
|---|---|---|
| Miami County rest areas | I-75, north of Dayton, northbound and southbound | 48 NB / 46 SB after expansion (under way, 2025) |
| Butler County rest areas | I-75, south of Dayton toward Cincinnati | 45 NB / 20 SB after expansion (under way, 2025) |
| Madison County rest areas | I-70, between Springfield and Columbus | 46 WB / 36 EB after expansion (under way, 2025) |
| Clinton County truck lot (former weigh station) | I-71 southbound, southeast of Dayton | 16 (2025) |
Space counts are from ODOT's truck parking table in its Transport Ohio 2026 working paper (2025), so they're about a year old and the expansions may have finished since. ODOT lists the sites by county, not milepost. Ohio's 2023 rest area plan is rebuilding 33 rest areas at 17 locations and adding 268 truck spaces. Source
ODOT says parking in the Dayton-Cincinnati-Columbus triangle is among the hardest to find in Ohio (statewide, use peaks between 2 and 3 a.m.): the four sites opened since 2021 near Dayton are already near or at capacity, and trucks still park in unmarked spots near the warehouse districts. Ohio weigh stations don't allow parking unless ODOT has converted them. Source
Weigh stations
We couldn't open the Ohio State Highway Patrol's current scale list in October 2026, so we don't name a weigh station for Dayton here. ODOT says Ohio weigh stations don't allow truck parking, and it has converted ten closed stations into truck lots, including I-71 southbound in Clinton County (16 spaces). Source
Interstate carriers don't need Ohio operating authority. For-hire loads that stay inside Ohio need a PUCO certificate. Source
