Freight in Bakersfield

Bakersfield sits where SR 99 meets SR 58 at the south end of the San Joaquin Valley, with I-5 about 25 miles west. Caltrans' 2024 counts show about 18,100 trucks a day on SR 99 at the SR 58/SR 178 junction downtown and about 19,700 at SR 65 on the north side, about 18,700 on SR 58 at SR 99, about 13,200 on I-5 at SR 58 and about 23,200 on I-5 at the Kern–Los Angeles county line, where trucks are 29% of traffic. Caltrans' freight plan says the Tejon Pass (the Grapevine) has the highest truck share of any high-volume count site in the state, and that SR 58 over the Tehachapi Pass has gained about 4,000 trucks a day since 2011 and is the backup route when weather closes Tejon Pass.

Farms and warehouses make the freight. Kern County's 2025 crop report puts farm production at $8.93 billion, up 12% from 2024: pistachios ($1.39 billion), grapes ($1.38 billion, mostly fresh table grapes), citrus ($1.19 billion), almonds ($1.12 billion) and carrots ($1.03 billion), then milk and cattle. Grimmway Farms, a carrot and vegetable grower, is based in Bakersfield. Caltrans' freight plan says Amazon built a fulfillment center in Bakersfield, Walmart is building a grocery distribution center in Shafter, and the Wonderful Industrial Park in Shafter is home to importers such as Target and Ross, where Ross's empty import containers are reloaded with Wonderful's nuts for export. At the Tejon Ranch Commerce Center, where I-5 meets SR 99, Tejon Ranch lists IKEA's 1.8 million sq ft distribution center plus Caterpillar, Dollar General, Famous Footwear and L'Oréal USA.

Main routes and truck traffic

The highways most loads in and out of Bakersfield run on: SR 99, SR 58, I-5, SR 178, SR 204, SR 65, SR 43, SR 119, SR 223.

SR 99 runs north through Delano and Visalia to Fresno and Sacramento, and south to Wheeler Ridge, where it joins I-5 for the climb over the Grapevine to Los Angeles. SR 58 runs east over the Tehachapi Pass to Mojave and Barstow, where it meets I-15 and I-40, and west to I-5 near Buttonwillow. I-5 runs up the west side of the valley to Stockton and the Bay Area. SR 178 heads east up the Kern River canyon, SR 204 (Golden State Avenue) cuts through downtown, SR 65 goes north to Porterville, SR 43 runs north through Shafter to Wasco, and SR 119 goes west to Taft.

The two mountain passes set the schedule. Caltrans' freight plan says SR 58 is four lanes except a seven-mile stretch between I-5 and Stockdale Highway on the west edge of Bakersfield, and that SR 58 with SR 14 keeps freight moving when Tejon Pass closes for weather. In winter storms Caltrans can require chains on mountain routes. On the SR 58 grade near Tehachapi, Caltrans lists the Keene scale eastbound and the Cache Creek scale westbound.

Who hauls out of Bakersfield

About two out of three for-hire carriers based in Bakersfield run a single truck or less. That's who we work for: owner-operators and small fleets who want a dispatcher handling the load boards, broker calls and paperwork. One FMCSA record reports far more trucks than its equipment list shows, so we left it out of the truck count.

What we book, by truck type

Reefer

Table grapes, citrus and carrots ship refrigerated out of Kern County for much of the year. We check temps and pickup windows, and your reefer unit must be reported in CARB's ARBER system.

Dry van

Amazon, Target, Ross, IKEA and Dollar General run distribution centers in Bakersfield, Shafter and Tejon Ranch, and almonds ship long after harvest.

Flatbed

Farm equipment, construction materials and oilfield supplies move across Kern County. We check securement, tarps and the grades on SR 58 and the Grapevine before we book.

Power only

Warehouses in Shafter and at Tejon Ranch put preloaded trailers and containers on the market. We confirm the trailer meets California rules before you hook.

Box truck

Parcel, grocery and final-mile deliveries across Bakersfield, Shafter, Delano and Tehachapi keep 26-foot box trucks busy.

How we dispatch here

  • Before your first California load we confirm a 2010 or newer engine, Clean Truck Check compliance and, for reefers, ARBER reporting
  • Before a load over the Grapevine we check QuickMap for Tejon Pass closures and chain controls, and plan SR 58 as the backup
  • Southbound on I-5 you'll pass the Grapevine scale near Lebec, which CHP runs 24 hours, so we plan legal weights before pickup
  • California trucks with three or more axles must stay in the far-right lane or a marked truck lane, so we plan the Grapevine and Tehachapi grades at truck-lane speeds
  • There's no state rest area on SR 99 in Kern County, so we line up your 10-hour break at Buttonwillow, Tejon Pass or a truck stop before you roll

State rules, permits and taxes are on our California dispatch page.
