Freight in Spokane
Spokane International Airport calls the city the largest metropolitan freight hub between Seattle and Minneapolis. WSDOT's draft 2026 freight plan maps three freight hubs in town: the area around BNSF's Yardley Yard, which it calls the largest freight center in the region (about 11,900 freight jobs and 8.8 million sq ft of warehousing), East Spokane (23.2 million sq ft) and the airport area on the West Plains (12 million sq ft, with a foreign trade zone). WSDOT says US 395 carries 7.2 million tons of freight worth $13.5 billion through Spokane each year, and the airport counted over 100,000 vehicles a day on I-90 in the region.
Local freight is groceries, e-commerce, metals, paper and grain. URM Stores runs a 680,000 sq ft distribution center on North Freya with dry, frozen and perishable groceries for member stores in Washington, Idaho, Montana and Oregon, about 20,000 loads a year. Amazon announced its first Eastern Washington fulfillment center in Spokane in 2018, with more than 1,500 jobs. Kaiser Aluminum's Trentwood mill in Spokane Valley rolls plate and sheet for aerospace, and Inland Empire Paper in Millwood makes over 500 tons of newsprint a day. Spokane International Airport handled over 70,000 tons of cargo in 2018 and built a rail-truck transload site. In wheat country around Spokane, harvest runs from early July to mid-September, and about 60% of the state's grain moves by barge on the Columbia and Snake rivers.

Main routes and truck traffic
The highways most loads in and out of Spokane run on: I-90, US 395, US 2, US 195, North Spokane Corridor (US 395), SR 290 (Trent Ave).
I-90 runs west through Ritzville, Moses Lake and Ellensburg and over Snoqualmie Pass to Seattle, and east through Spokane Valley and Liberty Lake to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and on to Missoula. US 395 leaves I-90 at Ritzville for the Tri-Cities, and north of Spokane it runs to Colville and the Canadian border. US 2 runs west toward Wenatchee and northeast to Newport and Sandpoint, Idaho, and US 195 runs south toward Pullman and Lewiston.
WSDOT is building the North Spokane Corridor, a 10.5-mile limited-access route between I-90 and US 2 and US 395 north of town; 7 miles are open, and the last link to I-90 is being built in phases from 2026 to 2030, which WSDOT expects to take trucks off city arterials. Westbound, trucks over 10,000 lb must carry at least two extra tire chains from November 1 to April 1 on I-90 between North Bend and Ellensburg.

Truck parking and weigh stations
| Rest area | Where | Truck spaces |
|---|---|---|
| Sprague Lake rest areas | I-90, mileposts 241 (eastbound) and 242 (westbound), about 39 miles west of Spokane | Truck count not published |
| Schrag rest areas | I-90, milepost 198, both directions, about 23 miles west of Ritzville | Truck count not published |
| Spokane and Spokane Valley, all designated sites | Urban area, including private truck stops | 291 (2022 plan) |
| I-90 from Ellensburg to Spokane, all designated sites | 193-mile corridor west of town | 556 (2022 plan) |
Space totals are from WSDOT's 2022 truck parking assessment, which used truck GPS stops from 2021, so they're about five years old. It found 124 stops at the Sprague Lake rest areas in its sample, 43% of them longer than seven hours, and many trucks parked on ramps and in undesignated spots. In Spokane, most unofficial parking was on last-mile streets in the Hillyard neighborhood and in Spokane Valley north of I-90 exit 291B. Source
WSDOT's rest area pages list Sprague Lake and Schrag as open but don't give truck space counts. Rest areas with truck parking allow stays of up to 11 hours. Source
Weigh stations
The Washington State Patrol lists the Spokane port of entry on I-90 westbound at milepost 299, near Liberty Lake, for trucks coming in from Idaho. Heading west toward Seattle, the next one on I-90 is the Cle Elum port at milepost 80, also westbound. The Patrol's page doesn't list hours, so we don't promise when a port is open. Source
WSDOT's e-screening program checks a truck's weight, safety rating and credentials while it keeps moving, so safe and legal carriers with a transponder can bypass weigh stations. Source
