Freight in Corpus Christi

Corpus Christi is a port city first. The Port of Corpus Christi says 203.4 million tons moved through its ship channel in 2025, the third most of any U.S. port, led by 127.4 million tons of crude oil and 18.6 million tons of LNG exports. TxDOT's port profile lists 13 liquid docks, 3 dry bulk docks, 5 multipurpose cargo docks, 340,000 sq ft of covered storage and more than 140 acres of open storage, with the port's own Corpus Christi Rail Terminal linking BNSF, CPKC and Union Pacific. The new Harbor Bridge over the ship channel, a $1.3 billion TxDOT project, opened in summer 2025.

Around the bay are refineries and plants that load trucks. Valero's Corpus Christi refineries handle 370,000 barrels a day and have an eight-bay truck rack for local markets, and Flint Hills Resources' two refineries (350,000 barrels a day) make fuel for San Antonio, Austin, Waco and Dallas-Fort Worth. North of the bay, Steel Dynamics' Sinton mill is built for 3 million tons of flat-rolled steel a year, ArcelorMittal makes up to 2 million metric tons of hot-briquetted iron in Portland, Cheniere's Corpus Christi LNG plant is growing past 25 million tonnes a year, and Gulf Coast Growth Ventures makes polyethylene and glycol in San Patricio County. On I-37, TxDOT's corridor study found trucks are typically 20% to 25% of traffic.

Main routes and truck traffic

The highways most loads in and out of Corpus Christi run on: I-37, I-69E / US 77, US 181, SH 358 (South Padre Island Drive), SH 286 (Crosstown), SH 44, SH 35, SH 361.

I-37 runs northwest through Mathis and Three Rivers to San Antonio. US 77, being upgraded as I-69E, runs south through Kingsville to Harlingen and Brownsville and north toward Victoria and Houston. US 181 crosses the ship channel on the Harbor Bridge to Portland, Gregory and Sinton, where SH 35 heads up the coast. SH 44 runs west toward Robstown and Alice, SH 358 and SH 286 carry traffic across the city, and SH 361 serves Ingleside and Port Aransas. TxDOT names I-69/US 77, I-37, US 181 and SH 361 among the district's priority corridors.

Hurricane season, June 1 to November 30, is the big risk here. TxDOT calls I-37 one of the few limited-access hurricane evacuation routes away from the southern Texas coast, so storms can fill it in both directions. TxDOT is still upgrading US 77 to interstate standards between Kingsville and Riviera, with completion estimated for 2028.

What we book, by truck type

Flatbed

Steel from the Sinton mill, plant construction and project cargo across the port's docks keep flatbeds busy. We check securement, tarps and port gate rules before we book.

Dry van

Dry van freight comes into the Coastal Bend for stores and plants, and reloads can be thin. We line up the next load in San Antonio, Houston or the Rio Grande Valley before you deliver.

Reefer

Rio Grande Valley citrus from October to May and South Texas onions from March to mid-July move north on US 77 past Corpus Christi. We plan reefer reloads around those seasons.

Tanker

Valero's refineries have an eight-bay truck rack for local markets. Tanker loads need the right endorsements, so we confirm the product, the rack and the paperwork before you book.

Power only

Plants and port yards can put preloaded trailers on the market. We confirm the trailer, the pickup number and site access rules before you go.

How we dispatch here

  • During hurricane season (June 1 to November 30) we watch NOAA forecasts, since I-37 is an evacuation route and storms can close plants and port gates
  • For refinery, plant and port pickups, we confirm site access, safety gear and any credential the shipper requires before you're dispatched
  • On I-37, where TxDOT found parking about 83% full on average, we plan your break before you leave the coast

  • We check DriveTexas for work zones on US 77 near Kingsville before a southbound load
